Boise, Idaho
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
68F / 20C
Precipitation
Total Time = 7h 01m 20s
Overall Rank = 831/1500
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 108/147
Pre-race routine:

Practice swim the day before and dinner with Rick, his family, and my family. Last minute set-up in transition and putting on the suit!
Event warmup:

Lots of stretching!
Swim
  • 59m 52s
  • 1931 meters
  • 03m 06s / 100 meters
Comments:

I survived the swim!!! It was very windy and created a situation where the first 1/4 was into a head wind, 1/2 had cross winds, and the only part without wind had a very happy go lucky sheriff in his support boat going too fast in his excited frenzy causing a wake the whole time on that side. However - I survived the very cold swim!!!
What would you do differently?:

Like always I need lessons and to learn to swim. However, I am pleased. No back stroke and even if slow, no panic!
Transition 1
  • 08m 2s
Comments:

Clean transition meant no gear was out. All the bike gear in a colored bag and I did not set it up as smartly as I could have. Also, I chose to unclip my shoes from bike and run in them as I had not practiced getting into the shoes while riding.
What would you do differently?:

Set up transition better and practice packing skills includeing condom rolling my socks.
Bike
  • 3h 10m 35s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.63 mile/hr
Comments:

Loved the bike even if the last 20 miles was in pouring rain. Just more incentive to finish earlier to avoid "getting caught in the rain"! :)
What would you do differently?:

Always need more hill work and need to up the cadence on my bike to spin up some of the rollers.
Transition 2
  • 05m 10s
Comments:

Very wet transition, but as my newest avatar will attest - I was smiling as I left.
What would you do differently?:

need to put the ynks in my new shoes and need to wear one shirt for bike and run instead of changing.
Run
  • 2h 37m 41s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Second loop was hard as you go into town through crowds cheering those heading down the finish while you run across a timing mat in turn around to go back to the park.
What would you do differently?:

run more miles in training. Did not run enough overall training miles. However, did not walk and kept forward motion all day. Was ok with the run as i loved the first HIM!
Post race
Warm down:

Chocolate shake and walk-about as I hung at the finish to cheer on others and wait for buddy Rick.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hmmmm . . . lifestyle the last 40 years probably contributed. I had a great first HIM and would recomend Boise to any and everyone!

Event comments:

So far the most enjoyable race I have ever attended. There was even a point on the bike course where I was passing a correctional center complex and the weekend community service people (chain-gang) stood on the side of the road to cheer us on. now that is a community that is glad to see triathletes! :)

I so would recommend this to anyone thinking about a 70.3 or just adding another race to the year. The town is beautifule, you can adjust to the cold water, the scenery is awsome, and the race is well put on!

Hey thanks for that!  I'm planning that as my first 70.3 next year!  Someone else posted ab out a dreadful 4:15 a.m. shuttle.  Oy.  Not liking that thought but maybe that's the norm in long distance???

Congratulations, Jerry!  You had an awesome race, especially with a windy swim and rainy bike ride.  I think your new avatar sums it up, though - that one's a keeper!!!

Jerry, I agree with you this is the most fun that I have had competing in a Tri. Thanks for hauling my bike and providing general support out there.

I knew you would do well once you got out of the water. What's next?

Awesome job. Gotta love the ID attitude towards big events like this. They just think crazy people killing themselves swimming, biking, and running are the most cool people ever!

Awesome job out there Jerry!  See how much more fun a race can be if the temperature isn't 100 degrees? Your avatars over the last 2 races show a MUCH different person than last year. You look LEAN and MEAN now!

Way to go! Now sign up for Mountain Man so you can coach me for it!!
