Cool vid. But the question is: if you DO have that much left at the end of a race, did you race your best race throughout?

The answer to that would be no. If you leave it all out on the course, then you should have nothing left at the finish. Unless, you are packing nitrous for a final shot.

Or you have a strategy and a plan. Looks to me like he won, no?

True, and good point.

However, the counter-point of that would be if he left everything out on the course, then there would be no need to sprint at the end. He would have been ahead already.

Eiter way, he won and that is key.

I don't know.  Looks like they were all part of a pack.  Probably the lead pack.  I look at it like a 5k or 10k race on the track in the Olympics.  Sometimes the pack mentality takes over and the whole pack holds back, slower than normal.  This benefits the sprinters at the end.  I have no doubt they really did leave it on the course/track.  But for this race, maybe it made sense, strategically, to keep that stuff in the tank.  Just in case.  And it looks like it paid off in the end on this one.

If he had burned through his reserves earlier in the race, he might not have been able to stay ahead when the sprinting started.  It looks to me like he had a strategy (although he certainly cut it close)

I think thats a pretty cool video. It's obvious that he was working his butt off on the course and that is why he won. I think the athletes in the video might be a a different level than most everyone else.

The guy in the blue takes off and gets caught in the end at the last second. Both of those guys gave it their all. The guy in blue pushed the envelope too far, and paid for it.

This is my favorite triathlon related video by far and it really pumps me up. I am very competitive and this is the stuff that hits home. I actually thought about this video at the end of my brick when it was like 98 degrees outside and I was on the course i will be on tomorrow morning. I thought about what it would feel like at the end and if i could give it that.... i tried somewhat but i was pooped!

That was amazing. I used to sprint when I was younger and that was about my 100 dash pace.

I agree that is probably my favorite triathlon video I have ever seen..... every time I see it I want to go out and run... then I wait a little while for the feeling to pass, and then everything is back to normal. Love the video, though - very cool.

Yeah, though his strategy may have secured second place and the other guy was going to beat him anyway.

ITU racing is strategically different that what most of us here do. These athletes have a very, very different definition of "leaving it all out on the course" than most people.

If anyone wants to see this kind of racing up close, BT is running the aid station on the run course of the ITU race at the Mussleman. It's a one mile loop so the pros pass the aid station 6 times.

The speed, the level of effort, the pain, the sheer athleticism and force of will they exhibit is absolutely incredible and watching all of these things increase with each lap is as engrossing and inspiring as anything else you're likely to see this summer.

The athletes are also extremely personable and approachable.

to add to Marmma's post, the ITU guys are the most complete triathletes (Those jumping onto 70.3 and IM or winning other no draft legal races are making this clear) and the perception that they don't race as hard because of the legal draft on the bike or the silly statement questioning whether they race as hard as they could or not well both are inaccurate.

ITU racing format requires athletes to have a highly developed aerobic system 8as any endurance sport) but also have your body adapted to handle anaerobic efforts on the swim/bike and run. The fact that someone has raced as hard as possible for the entire race doesn't make impossible to still have the energy for a kick like that. At that point the body’s energy will rely mostly on the anaerobic system making possible to speed up for short periods of time up to 2 min. If you see the video the final kick is around 1 min or less. That's the reason why athletes are able to burst like that at the end of certain events, those who don't have the energy to do so didn't have the fitness to handle the distance/pace to begin with.

This guys ARE going all out for the entire race and finish it under 1:50 hrs. usually to win one of this races the athlete has to swim sub 18 min for a 1.5K, ride sub 55 min for 40K and after that have the legs to post a sub 31-32 min run.

Anyway, that video is pretty cool and there are many others on the ITU website. Tomorrow is the championship in Vancouver and if you want to watch it you can do so online on their webcast: http://www.triathlon.org/?call=TVRZeA==&keep=sh
