Pre-race routine:

Not much to it this time, coming off three weeks with no training I didn't put much into the pre race routine. Packed my stuff the night before, got up at 3am, started the drive down at 3:30.
Event warmup:

Not much to speak of, maybe 75 meters of swimming
Swim
  • 28m 53s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

This the part of the race that I'm most pleased with and where I learned a lot. I was so concerned about not being ready that I decided to focus on swimming efficiently rather than fast. Even after going way off course b/c I started to swim towards the sprint course buoys I finished with what may have been my best swim time and I came out of the water feeling fresh. I'm going to focus on efficiency more often.

Comments:

Not a great ride but no complaints, this was my second time on the bike in 3 weeks.
Transition 2

Comments:

Not good, not bad
Run
  • 1h 15m 25s
  • 6.21 miles

Comments:

Three weeks off affected my mental attitude more than my physical fitness and it was on the run where it really fell apart.

I was doing pretty well for the first 3 miles or so and then my head totally fell apart. My body could have continued to run but my head kept telling me to walk a bit. Then the negative self talk kicked in and it all spiraled down from there. The last two miles I walked just as much as I ran.

Embarrasing really, everyone was very nice by telling me that I did well considering the long break but the more I think about it the more pissed I am at myself.
What would you do differently?:

Either Positive self talk or tell my head to shut the F up!
Post race
Event comments:

This was a valuable race and I think will do more for me in the future than had I trained and done well. I learned a valuable lesson about my swim, I learned something about my nutrition during the bike, and I learned a great deal about what i need to do mentally if I really want to improve. Time to focus.

You did do a good job for a 3 week layoff!

Sometimes however you do need to tell yourself to shut the F up during the tough times.

Great job!  I know the layoff hurt you more mentally than physically, but it was a solid race.  As for the run, don't worry about it - chalk it up to a learning experience and take that with you on future races.

Laying off and coming back can be too ... in terms of the voices in your head, it is hard to drown them out so don't kick yourself too hard.

I play mental games when faced with something like this (which frequently happens when doing a long swim).  I divide whatever I am doing into section and then tick them off while telling myself "... okay, another one down.  I am 30% done ... here comes another, 40% and almost halfway."

Works me most of the time ... but probably because my brain is so oxygen starved by then that almost anything would work.

I tend to have issues with negative self-talk too. For me, it helped to just take it a mile at a time - breaking it down so I didn't think about all 6 miles I had to run. Not sure if that will help you or not, but it's worth a shot!

You really did great overall - races after 3 weeks off would be tough! Now, get to training, so you can really race Chattanooga!!

That was a great effort with all of the time off beforehand.  Good to see you back out there racing again.  Just remember, tris have 3 parts...it is 50% mental, 50% physical, and 50% mental.

OKay, I must say that I'm amazed that you did as well as you did - considering your lack of pre-race training.  It encourages me in 2 ways: 1) that I shouldn't be such a wimp about signing up for a race if I don't feel ready and, 2) that races are really a great training ground for, well, training.  I'm inspired by your performance and think you did awesome....I hope to get back to training soon.

So here's the thing... I give you mad props for doing this race.  You had a lot going on before the race and 3 weeks of limited training gets in your head whether or not you have a race right afterwards.  I think there are a lot of people that would have opted out of racing but you stuck it out and got through.  You finished it and it sounds like in doing so you learne a few things that ultimately will be more valuable to you as an athlete than another experience might have been.  So there .  FWIW, you had a good race all things considered!
