Age Group Rank = 19/23
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30 and left the house at 4:15. Didn't feel quite normal. I woke up a little achy and had a knot in my stomach, but I chalked that up to being race morning. Little did I know that those were signs of things to come. 1:45 drive down to Lagrange. Ate some granola and drank some gatorade along the way.
Event warmup:

Got to the race about an hour early. Jogged for about 10 min then swam a few hundred yards and waited in line to start.
Swim
  • 26m 20s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was the only bright spot of the race. I felt smooth the whole time.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Maybe push a little harder for the last few hundred.
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

This was my first hint that it wasn't going to be a good race. Energy was low out of the water so I walked to my bike. Was in a daze putting on my top, so I put it on backwards. Had to fumble with that to get it turned around. Also put one of my socks on backwards. Walked my bike to the line and hopped on.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe wear my top during the swim so I don't have to put it on while wet.
Bike
  • 1h 19m 8s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.84 mile/hr
Comments:

Started out okay, but by the turn around, I was starting to fade. I tried to lower my gearing and increase cadence to save my legs, but it didn't help too much. At mile 18 I was thinking ahead to the 6 miles of running soon to follow, so I pretty much resolved to finish the bike without wasting too much energy. There was a lot of coasting and soft pedaling.
What would you do differently?:

Feel better. Try to stay in aero bars more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Walked bike back to the rack to try and psyche myself up for the run. Threw on visor (forgot sunglasses) and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 27m 57s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 14m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Awful. Couldn't run a continuous mile. I would run until I was ready to lose my lunch, then walk, and repeat. But the runs got shorter and the walks got longer. After the turn around it was pretty much all walking. Mentally, I was out of it and the race couldn't have ended soon enough.
What would you do differently?:

Hard to say. I wish I could have attempted this feeling 100%.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around for a little bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

stomach bug.

Event comments:

Not a good race, but I think part of that was due to a stomach bug. My stomach felt worse and worse as the race went on. On the drive home, I stopped and got McDonalds, and a few exits later the McDonalds came back up. I was so thirsty but couldn't drink anything for fear that it would come up too. I threw up a couple more times at home, and I felt like crap for the rest of Saturday and Sunday, and still feel a little cruddy today. Talk about bad timing. I'll file this race away in the "experience" folder.

Dang. I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad race. A stomach bug will kill your race for sure.

Sometimes your body just doenst want to respond on race day- nothing you can do about it but learn and move on. That said, look at the bright spots and take the rest as a positive learning experience to take to the next race. Good job on still pulling a respectable time- it takes a lot of mental toughness not to pack it in and finish.

Nice job pushing through something like that. I had two stomache bugs in 2007 and they pretty much destroyed me. How you raced with one is a mystery. Definitely race with a top on. No need to be fumbling with clothing in Transition. Great job hanging in there.
