Total Time = 1h 19m 28s
Overall Rank = 76/186
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 5/14
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30am. Breakfast of Cheerios and a yogurt smoothie. Headed out about 5:30 for the 12 minute drive to the YMCA. Set up transition then picked up my chip and got body marked. Found Kristen (enders_shadow) and met Susan (sk2a2005) and Judi (zipp1). Kicked out of the transition area at 6:40 and headed over for the pre-race meeting. Killed some time watching the start of the swimming, then just hung out until my start time (8:04:50).
Event warmup:

about 150m in the pool around 6:30
Swim
  • 06m 34s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

got passed by two guys in the pool but I just kept on doing my thing. Not my fastest for 300m. Guess I should have gone a little harder. Just missed my goal of 6:20
What would you do differently?:

swim a little faster
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

fairly long run from the pool to TA. Ran it, found my bike without hesitation, dropped my swim stuff, rinsed off my feet, slipped on my socks, got the shoes on, sunglasses and helmet on, and I was off and running to the exit. I was pretty efficient.
What would you do differently?:

not much. learn a flying mount?
Bike
  • 38m 45s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Ran out of transition, crossed the mount line and climbed on. Got up to speed unclipped, then clipped in; spun in lower gears for a bit and then found my legs and got down to it. Rode mostly in the aerobars, except at the turns; I used those for grabbing a drink, too. The route isn't flat, not hilly either, so it's pretty fast and great for aero.

I got passed by at least six riders (I passed around 4), mostly guys on tri bikes. I got passed by the 11yo boy who started the swim a little after me. He never got very far ahead of me but I couldn't catch him without blowing myself out. (He was smokin' hot on the run!) I got a little messed up by two cars that got between me and a gal on a hybrid that they didn't seem to want to pass. I was coming up on them pretty quickly trying to figure out how to deal with this jam-up. Fortunately, we got to an intersection and they were ordered to a stop; I passed them on the right and then made my left in front of them. Then I passed the hybrid rider. The ride was over pretty quickly!
What would you do differently?:

not much. maybe get a bottle that would allow me to drink while aero.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Run
  • 30m 44s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was hot, no shade! Ran every step! Got to go down the chute all by myself. "Number 307, Nicole Thomas finishing!" Yea!
What would you do differently?:

learn to run faster!
Post race
Warm down:

some walking, hung out in the shade of the pavilion eating oranges and drinking Mt Dew and water. Went back to the chute to cheer on the finishers and see Kristen come in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't run fast enough!

Event comments:

didn't stay for the food or awards
