Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 51/258
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/13
Pre-race routine:

Wife and I were at a family reunion staying at a resort. Got up at 4:00, loaded up the bikes and drove to the site. Saw at least 10 deer on the road just trying to get to the interstate.

We were one of the first people there, got in the first rack and set up my stuff. Helped the wife get here stuff in order then we hung out for a bit and chatted.
Event warmup:

Not much, took my flip flops off and sprinted across the football field to get the heart rate up.
Swim
  • 07m
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt really good on the swim, kept my stuff in order and just went out there and swam like I have been practicing.
What would you do differently?:

Obviously more lessons should help me get faster and need to figure out flip turns when doing pool swims.
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Still wearing socks so that takes a couple extra seconds. Need to work on leaving shoes clipped on, haven't had much luck with it yet.
Bike
  • 33m 57s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 20.32 mile/hr
Comments:

Just got out there and rode, tried to stay in aero as much as possible. Passed a few people and got passed by one guy, hung with him until just about the end of the bike.

Saw a girl in front of me stopped on the side of the road, as I rode by I asked if she was ok. Her response " I got a f#^&ing flat and she did a great discus with her bike, spun around a few times and everything and heaved it up into the woods.
What would you do differently?:

Trying to figure out how hard to ride and still have something left for the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Did my first flying dismount, nailed it, was in the first rack so got my stuff together quickly and ran out. My number belt seemed to have blown away a bit and was near the back of my bike and so wasted some seconds grabbing it.

Looking at the AG times Transitions got me from 3rd to 2nd, the guy in 3rd was faster on the swim and alot faster on the run but I gained 72 seconds on him in the Transitions. He finished 9 seconds behind me.
What would you do differently?:

Secure my bib better in transition.
Run
  • 26m 55s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Had a conversation with myself in the first mile. I started out pretty fast and had to tell myself to slow down, I said if I could run the first one around 9:15 or so I would let myself go faster for the 2nd 2 laps. I believe my 2nd lap was around 9:05 and the 3rd was 8:50, so nice negative split. Didn't get passed by anyone and sprinted to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder not try to save so much for the last mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Was handed water right at the finish line, walked around and waited for Sam to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Felt great, should have just gone harder on the bike and run.

Event comments:

Ken puts on a great race. This race is cheaper than Reston and put on by one guy where Reston is run by Setup. As you cross the finish line they had volunteers handing you bottled water. Big pavilion set up with Bagels/Cream Cheese, Fruits, pretzels and all kinds of stuff.

Saw people of all ages and configurations there, lots of mtn. bikes and a few beach cruisers, everyone except the lady that threw her bike seemed to have alot of fun.

Wife and I stopped by on our way back from the reunion just to see if they had times up. She finished 6th out of 20. Believe it or not but I finished 2nd... And I missed the awards...

I feel awful, I have never even sniffed the front of the AG and came in 2nd here, would have been very cool to be there. Luckilly the fast people in 35-39 decided not to come out today, their loss is my gain : )

That lady should be competing in a shot put or bike toss instead.  She must have had a real blow out to not be able to make it back.   Great race.  Moving at over 20mph hour on the bike and still wanting to push more is saying something.

Great race! I need to run harder so I can be faster than you next time. Or just put in more bike miles so I can beat you there. Seriously, you trained hard and it showed.
