Hey gang:

I had a really wonderful phone call today from Active.com, and wanted to share the news with all the BTers.

Last month so many BTers came together to run the Hit the Trails XC 5K race in honor of Christine Rusher (Lucy). The race director Steve Dunn, decided to give all proceeds from the race to the Rusher family. Online registration was held through Active.com, so I had a little seed of an idea.

I have a contact at Active.com from my TeamToyota days last year. I emailed her about the race and all, and she passed my email around the company. Today she called me to let me know that Active agreed to my request and will donate their entire proceeds from the race registration to the Rusher family. They will be sending a check for $375.00 to Steve Dunn/FishHawk Road Runners to pass along to the Rushers.

During the course of figuring out where to send the money this afternoon, I had the pleasure to speak with Steve, and he asked me to pass along the news that a check for the rest of the race proceeds (after costs) of $5500.00 will be presented to Tom Rusher this week (or was presented last week, I can't quite get it all straight)

In any case, thanks in large part to the wonderful support of the BT crew, the Rusher family will receive $5875.00 from the race, in addition to any money donated through the Paypal account set up here.

WHAHOOOOOO!

And thanks to FishHawk Road Runners and Active.com for their very generous contributions!

You all should be proud of yourselves!

Thank you so much for doing that.  I registered before the paypal was set up and was resigned to active getting it.  Kudos to you, active, and the RD

That is excellent news!

Have to say that I am (pleasantly) surprised by Active.com.  I wont grumble quite as loudly next time that I have to pay their service fee for a race.

Thanks...I was hoping some people would feel more kindly towards Active. As a former RD, they really do provide a good service for just $3 per racer. You get registration info in a database and reporting, etc. plus they handle all the payment headaches and just give you a check. They let you add folks to the database who register offline, too.

RDs can absorb that fee into their entry price, but most add it on to the entry, making Active look like the bad guy, when they are really just another legitimate expense for a race organizer. Imagine if you had to pay for a race like this:

Race entry: 15.00
Active.com: 3.00
Timing co: 2.00
Gatorade: 2.50
Paper cups 1.50
Bananas .50
race numbers 1.00

well, you get the idea....off my soapbox now.

:-)

Well, I think it would stop some of the about race cost if people knew where the money was going. Of course then they would that they paid $0.50 for Bananas and did not eat one, or could have gotten one at costco for $0.45

Thanks soo much for getting that to happen! What great news and your efforts should be commended. It's also nice to know that Active.com is supportive to those in need too.

Thanks again!

Awesome! Just goes to show what you can get if you just ask. Go Active, go you, and go Steve. And God bless the Rushers - they are still very much in my prayers.
