Total Time = 1h 42m 59s
Overall Rank = 317/517
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 1/7
Pre-race routine:

Rode my bike to the race, which had a couple of big hills so the legs got warmed up. Set up transition, chatted with Michele and a couple of others I ran into. I arrived really early so was wandering a lot.
Event warmup:

Stretched a lot, got in the water briefly to get wet before the race started. I was in the 11th wave so I had to stand around for a long time before we started. It was nice that they started every 3 minutes, as that helped move things along.
Swim
  • 10m 10s
  • 402 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Somehow I ended up starting front and center...so I sprinted a lot when the horn blew, but still had a few ladies swim over top of me. At one point someone had a hold of my legs and someone else managed to grab my arms, so that was a little disconcerting. Got into the groove pretty easily, and just powered through. One lady kept zigzagging in front of me and that was driving me nuts, though. Finally I passed her, ha!
What would you do differently?:

I think I'd wear my wetsuit. Even though it was a short race, I think it would have been nice to have the extra speed.
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

My bike was a long way from the water, had to serpentine run through the transition area to get there. Once I did reach the bike I did move pretty fast, and the bike exit was close by.
What would you do differently?:

I forgot to put on my shirt that had my number on it and almost went back for it. It had been laying on my wheel (this will be significant later.). I also forgot to eat a gel like I had planned but did have one in my bento box so I ate that in the first couple of miles of the bike.
Bike
  • 49m 55s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 16.59 mile/hr
Comments:

The ride actually went by pretty fast. I was feeling untrained since I haven't done any long rides lately, but luckily my body remembered what to do. Traffic control was excellent, as the roads were not closed down completely. I saw a deer when I first started riding. Every time I do this ride, I see deer.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight and be faster on the uphills!
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

Riding into T2, my husband and kids were just arriving so I hollered at them which was fun! Then I looked for my shirt with my race number on it for a while but it was nowhere to be found. So I pulled the bike number off my bike and carried that with me. Yes, I am a dork, but I wanted my name announced when I finished, dammit!
What would you do differently?:

Race belt that fits so I don't have to mess with a shirt. Maybe not use the Garmin since it took a few seconds to put it on...although it does help me with pacing.
Run
  • 38m 56s
  • 4.3 miles
  • 09m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

I tried to run around a 10-min mile for the first mile and then eventually get it under 9, which I did for a bit, but ended up a little over 9-min miles. I was trying to pass people, so that was fun, and counting breaths which made the time fly. I picked up the pace the last mile, which was fun, as I managed to pass a lot of people who were out of energy.
What would you do differently?:

Just lose more weight so I don't have to deal with so much gravity!
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged the kids, drank water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight, tiredness (kids and dogs woke me up 4 times last night!)....undertrained on hills with the bike, lack of wetsuit.

Event comments:

Fun race! Awards ceremony was slow starting so the kids were getting a bit annoying wanting to leave...but mama won a gold medal and mama was staying to get it! :) Since it was a local tri, it was fun being announced as a local, that made it extra fun.

I really liked this race and will definitely do it again next year. Funny piece of trivia important only to me and maybe my parents....I was conceived at Beaver Lake just over 40 years ago.

I stood up a lot just to do something different, and passed a few people, mostly mountain bikes, although on the downhill I did pass a bunch of skinny gals....go gravity!

Nice job on the Athena win.

You must be a very confident swimmer.  I would be more than a little disconcerted over someone swimming over me while someone is pulling on my arms!

I guess I have learned by experiencing this a few times....they will either pass or I will...and the beatings will end!  I don't panic as much as I used to but I sure don't like it.  That's why I think I will wear my wetsuit next Saturday, just to have a little advantage.
