Subject: New Pool = Faster Times?

So our county built a "Aquatic Center" and it opened this week.  While I am gratefull as a swimmer for the new complex, I feel it was a foolish investment in taxpayers money.  Anyways that another topic.

I have a membership at the new "YMCA" that is located about two miles from the new Aquatic Center.  I decided to stop in a see what the facility looks like. WOW WOW WOW

$2 daily fee to swim as much as you like in the 10 lane competion pool (25 Yards).  What a bargain.....no contracts, no commitments during the off season.

I jumped in to start my sets and noticed that I was about 3-4 seconds faster on my first lap.  Must be the intial excitement....funny thing was that I was consistantly 3-4 seconds faster througout the whole swim.  The YMCA says its pool is also 25 Yards.  The only difference I could tell was that the water at the new pool was about 3-4 degrees cooler than the Y......would that account for the difference or could it be that newer water is simply faster than older water?!!?!!

At least our YMCA has decided on a distance.  Our only local YMCA with an indoor pool can't figure out if they have a 25 yard or a 25 meter pool.   I wonder if I could bring in one of those rolling wheel things and measure it for them.

Maybe our Y is a 25 meter pool.......a life guard told me it was in yards but he didn't seem quite sure of the difference between a yard and a meter (Georgia #1 in football #49 in education)

I have also noticed that in some pools that are supposed to be and seem to be the same size I will swim faster in one over another.  I have no idea why.

Okay interesting swimming trivia here. Did anyone notice a plethora of world records during swimming events this year?

The water there was deeper than standard (9' Vs 6' elsewhere)
There was an extra two lanes, one on either side of the competition lanes
There were gutters

All of that add up to smoother water and faster times. I'll bet some combination of those is the difference between your old pool and new one, deeper, more lanes and/or gutters or something similar making for smoother swimming water.

At my pool there are 3 lap lanes and the middle lane is always the fastest by a few seconds.  The end lane by the wall has jets that shoot water out and the end lane opens to the pool and the lazy river current flows into that lane.  Could be something like that

Good points....the new pool is much deeper and yes it has some sort of gutter system.

During the Olympics one of the commentators was discussing how a pool can be "faster". Apparently if a pool has gutter type things around it, the wake that the swimmers make is not absorbed in the body of water resulting in faster swim times. I recently noticed this when I switched pools....I was thrilled with the reduction in my 50m time but my friend pointed out the fact that this was a "faster" pool!!!

Intresting facts. I had no idea the particular pool you swim in can make you faster!

I'm not sure about faster but the water feels different in some pools to me.  I go to San Antonio a lot and the pool at Bally's feels different than my local pool.  Not really sure how to explain it.  Maybe because the pool in SA is 4' deep with not wave gutter?

Yeah I caught that. The diffusers [lane dividers for us lay folk] and how they're engineered also make a difference. FWIW I swim fastest at my home pool [with gutters] than anywhere else. Maybe in the off-season I'll do some testing and see if there's a difference between lanes at my pool... that should keep me occupied.

Oh- and $2/day with no contracts -- sounds like a winner to me! I pay $39/mo at the Y, only use it for swimming, and in the height of HIM training went there MAYBE 17 times maximum, ONE month. That still beats my monthly fee. +1 for new aquatic center!

Definitely there is a difference between pools,

as other people have said the deeper the pool the faster it is likely to be.  lane ropes make a difference, gutters on the outside make a difference.  But also the type of water makes a difference too,  chlorine, salt, etc.

I am very lucky and can swim at a great bit aquatic centre,  which has held a few world championship swimming meets in its time.   there are 5 pools there,  3 50m pools.   2 of those pools are competition pools one is a warm up pool which has a deeper end which can be used for water polo.

the competition pools are 10lane pools,  the warm up pool is 8 lane pool.  we have done tests with some of the good swimmers at my club,  there are definite noticeable differences between the comp pools and the warm up pools.

Can I just make a comment on that statement though.  I don't think any sporting type facility (within reason) can be classed as a foolish investment in taxpayers money.

Being in a country which has jsut overtaken the US as the fattest nation apparently, I wholeheartedly encourage any type of development in the health and fitness arena.

any money spent encouraging people to swim or move in any fashion has got to be good to help the rapidly increasing obesity problems.  thus decreasing the taxpayer spend for healthcare facilities, ie hospitals drs etc.

thats my take on it anyway.

Colder water is heavier so you float better. :-)

Seriously, there are many design issues in the construction of a pool that can improve swim times. Depth of the pool, the width of the lanes, the number of lanes, the design of the gutters and the lane lines. There is a real science to it. Of course there is the additional issue of the sheer number of people (waves and turbulence) in the pool at the same time. And the most critical factor . . . the slow guy in the lane ahead of you.

What a bargain.....no contracts, no commitments during the off season.

You could gain a lot of speed by not thinking there is a swimming "off season".  Then you could tack that speed onto your newfound speed from the faster pool (yes, such things exist) and be really fast next year.

Swim year round.  There is no off season....

It is definately possible the pool is helping you out but if I was you I would take a tape measure to both pools and see how accurat they are first.
