I read a post today where someone had hiccups for over an hour during a full Ironman. That would drive me nuts and could make it harder to eat/drink. In shorter races you might just suck it up, but for a longer race you might want to take the 30 ish seconds it takes to cure them.

You will need to sit down (in a safe place), can't do it standing or biking, (swimming you will need to stop and just float probaly, never tried it there) then close your eyes, try to center your thoughts on the most peaceful thing you can find to think about, breathe in slowly through your nose until your lungs will hold no more air, fully expanding your diaphram (diaphramtic breathing) and then breathe out very slowly through your mouth. We are talking like 5-10 seconds for inhale and 5-10 sec for exhale. This will cure hiccups if done correctly in 1-5 breaths. I have personally never had to go beyond the 3rd breath to cure them.

I know this is not earth shattering or major advice, but it is 100 percent effective and if it helps one person in a single race ever, well then its all good.

By the way, this technique is used as an anxiety reducing skill. So if you are having trouble falling asleep the night before a tri, having jitters on the beach before the swim or are feeling anxious at any point in time durring real life the same techniques is extremely effective. It is used with people who have anxiety attacks, agoraphobia, phobies, etc. and is the single most effective technique for reducing anxiety (aside from major tranquilizers).

Sweet. I've never had hiccups during a race, but I've been getting them very frequently lately. This'll help.

Virtually 100% guaranteed...and no eye-closing involved: Breathe in until you can't take any more air in. Works best if (really) you hold your nose. Count to 30. Then...without exhaling...take in another 'gulp' of air (however much you can...won't be much) and hold for as much of another quick 30-count you can. Then nice big, full, exhale.

Doesn't need to be 30 seconds each count...you can count more quickly than that. This has almost always worked for me and I was taught it maybe 30 years ago or more.

Your technique starts by initiating a sympathetic nervous system spike that results in an eventual parasympathetic nervious system response, the shift triggers the body to let go of the hiccup response because you kind of want to keep living.

However, if you are in an athletic event you may not want to spike more adrenalin into your system to increase your heart rate and then shock it into a decrease in excitation when you can simply briefly lower it and then continue on.

The technique you describe can also be used for other responses such as causing climax to occur in sex etc. , but may be counter productive for keeping the mind and body relaxed for a long distance tri. It is also unlikely to make you feel more relaxed on the beech prior to the swim. Although if you hold your breath long enough... it might help you to sleep the night before the tri, but will be more uncomfortable in general. 8).

I suffered from hiccups for many years, recurrent bouts sometimes lasting most of the day.  I think others may have thought I was a drunk.  My wife is an osteopathic physician, and one night she wrenched my back in a way I never expected (she didnt warn me to get the best effect).    Anyway, hiccups cured.  Was it because she scared the begeez out of me, or did she actually do something mechanical that fixed it?  No more hiccups, but now suffer from PTSD whenever she gives me a back rub.

My grandma taught me this one, and I have been laughed and scoffed at by many, but I have never had it fail me.

Drink water (gatorade, watever), while holding your ear canal shut. This is easiest with a paper cup you can grip with your teeth. (or a straw.)

Laugh away. But try it next time.

A spoonful of honey always gets rid of my hiccups for me...sounds odd but it works.  Trader Joes sells honey sticks that could be stashed in a backpack for hiccup emergencies.

This is a guaranteed way to cure somebody else's hiccups:

Right after a hiccup, offer them $20 if they can  hiccup again in the next 30 seconds. You will NOT lose your money. It's crazy, but it works!

I should have read this thread yesterday.  I was volunteering at a kids tri today and had the hiccups twice in the four hours I was there.  Argh!

I get the hiccups about a dozen times a day.  No cures have ever worked for me.  However, most of the time I only get about 5-8 hiccups at a time.  By the time I would think about a cure, they are gone.  But, sometimes I get them really strong for a half hour, which gives me a stomach ache.  It's just something I have to deal with.

The doctor has had me track what and when I eat and when I get the hiccups.  There's absolutely no correlation.  They can't figure out why I get them so much.  The chiropractor tried stretching my diaphragm but that didn't help.  Oh well.
