Subject: How often should I train?

Hey all :D

This forum is a fountain of knowledge, so thanks to all!

My question is: How often should you train? As much as your body can take it? As much as you want? I feel Ive been training  sufficiently for a newbie- planning on a triathlon in November, but how should i adjust my training plan?

Ultimate goal is a HIM possibly Feb 09 or later in the year if that plan doesnt come to fruition....

 Cheers

Depends on your goals, your life schedule, your fitness level, and your ability to recover.

As a newbie, your best bet is to find a training plan (plenty here!) that starts where you are and takes you where you want to go.

Depends.

Are you following a training plan, if yes the the plan will (should) have build and recovery cycles in it and the plans frequency will depend on what level you selected or can even change with one month with increase bike, the next increased run, etc.  There are 2x per week, 3x per week, on so on.

Based on your logs I'd recommend that you read this thread on determining the proper HR zones and begin to train using them.  The bike and run are not the same, can be close or can be very different, each individual is unique when it comes to this.

If a HIM is your goal, you'll need to understand all about nutrition, it's also a big learning curve.  Hammer nutrition has a good handbook that I used to learn about it all.

There's a lot to digest along the way, but train properly and you'll get there.  Best of luck!

Following a training plan may be the best thing for you to do although other commitments (job, family etc.) may ultimately dictate how the maximum amount of time you can spend training.

If you want to do a HIM in 5 months its gona be hurtful given where you are at now. I am doing my first HIM this Sunday. Best thing you can do is pick up a plan and stick with it. I would want to get those long ride up over 50, long runs over 13 and long swims over 1.5 miles. It looks like you are being consistant and that is a great start. The trick will be to increase that vollume without overtraining and inviting injury. If you haven't done an Oly, you should probably schedule one of those as your fitness level is getting pretty good for an Oly at this point. If you hold off on the HIM until say May or June you would probably be in good shape for it. It all depends on your ability to tollerate the increase in vollume.
