Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30, fed the dogs, made coffee and packed the car. Made my way to the race site, got body marked and set up in transition. I couldn't figure out what clothes I needed. Was it going to be cold, or was the sun going to come out and warm things up. It through everything off kilter, I didn't know what I needed.
Event warmup:

Miserable...no warm up. I had to wait 2 hours for my swim wave an early warm up didn't make sense, and closer to my wave I was in my wetsuit in sandals. I stood around trying to stay warm.
Swim
  • 15m 2s
  • 792 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

I waded into the water and couldn't believe how cold it was. The 2 hour wait did nothing for my psyche. I did a few pick ups and got thoroughly wet. Bounced around waiting for the start and trying to stay warm.

On the Go I vowed I would not let any AGer beat me out of the water, i was off like a shot and couldn't have sighted on the Buoy any better. Drafted off a relay swimmer. What the hell is that, we both got tangled up with a green detergent bottle as we try to round the buoy, and all begins to fall apart. When I rounded the second buoy I got severely disoriented, I should have followed the relay guy, but thought he was off course. Found the Lady of the Lake, scanned left to find the swim exit and got back on track. Swam until my arms touched sand, beating the rest of the pack by about a minute.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on sighting. I need to swim harder on the return. When I start to get off track I slow down and I need to stop that.

I am pleased with the swim as I made my goal significantly, but if I had posted the time I wanted it may have been a first place finish vs a second.
Transition 1
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

I suck at transitions.
What would you do differently?:

Not clean up in transition :). Without my box I didn't know where to put my wetsuit. I had trouble getting my socks on I need to work on that.
Bike
  • 47m 53s
  • 13.7 miles
  • 17.17 mile/hr
Comments:

I know I need to get moving on the bike as this is where my AG begin to catch me, I need as much headway as possible. I felt good on the bike, and passing people brings a boost to the confidence. I got very annoyed by two women riding side by side on 5&20. When I call out bike left they don't budge forcing me to move significantly into the car lane to get past. I wasn't going to follow them up that hill. I don't' understand how they don't get called for drafting or overtaking. Something for god's sake. They weren't gaining any advantage, but they were a hazard to other bikers.

I made it to mile 8 or 9 before I got passed by an AG. So I was pleased.
What would you do differently?:

Need more time on my bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Couldn't get my shoes off and sneakers on! Other than that it was a good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice, shoes on and shoes off.
Run
  • 26m 42s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

With my husband cheering me on at the timing mat that I was still racing I headed out of the shoot at a 6:58 pace. I was very pleased with the run. My goal was to run at a race pace and I feel I did that. I felt good and felt like I could keep the pace quick without too much effort. Coming down the home stretch on Lakeshore Drive I passed the third place AGer (didn't know it at the time). She had heavy footfalls and I could hear her pick up the pace, I was damned if she was going to dog me and steal it away from me at the finish. Besides I knew dex was with me too. I picked it up to a 7:30 pace and held it there until the final shoot.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, run faster next time.
Post race
Warm down:

grabbed some water and bananas. Thrilled that my son and nephew came down to watch me run it in. Hung out with family and friends. Stayed to get my 2nd place AG award. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more time on the bike. Need to practice on the sighting in the water, it seems to be the second buoy that I have trouble rounding, I either round too far, or not far enough.

Event comments:

Love this race. It is great to have family around; I know my kids are well cared for while I race, and my husband always helps ease the nerves. Having my son come out and cheer me on at the finish is more than I can ask. Until I am swimming under a minute for a 100 (ha, ha, ha) he will always think I am slacking. I will drive from NJ to do it next year.

Enjoy the moms in (slow) motion for the month Dex, and thanks for the incentive on the run.

Great podium shot! Congratulations.

Nice day to race, for those of us who didn't have to wait 2 hours anyway.

Awesome race!! You're such a competitor!  I hear you on the swim buoy thing.  I had trouble getting by the 1st detergent bottle and then got disoriented and couldn't tell which way to go.  Never had that happen before.

Anyway, you did such a great job!  Can't believe I didn't see you the whole time.  bummer.

Next year!  Smile
