I don't think I understand your "durable power of attorney" blurb. Are you saying you have a DNR or Living Will spelled out on your RID? I can tell you, as a paramedic, if I find you after an auto-ped accident and you are unresponsive I am going to manage your airway first. I'm not going to find that Road ID until that's taken care of. If you are in traumatic cardiac arrest it won't matter since in 16 years of EMS I have NEVER seen a trauma arrest live, it just doesn't happen. As far as being badly injured most EMS providers, once starting care of an unresponsive patient will err on the side of patient advocacy and treat the patient and let the lawyers figure it out afterward. I don't believe there has ever been a successful prosecution of a prehospital provider treating a patient as opposed to not treating a patient. I think the ROAD ID is a great tool but it has been said before several times in this thread regarding blood type. It's great that you know it but the hospital will ignore it until you are type and crossed. O NEG is what you will get in a trauma bay in the interim. Ultimately if you can fit it on there I need: Name Emergency Contact (preferably someone (family member) who knows your medical history) Medical History Allergies I can register you as a JOHN/JANE DOE at the trauma center but I would really like to talk to someone who knows a thing or two about you. Bottom line, if your sick and can't talk, I'll do what I need to do to stabilize you and get you to the hospital ALIVE or as close to alive as possible. -Chris |

As a FF/Medic - I do check for ID bands on any person I arrive on. It could let me know if you do have a medical problem such as seizures or "I'm a dumba** and fall off my bike often, leave me alone" The hospital staff likes to see these too because if I take you to a hospital that you've never been to before, they have a way to contact someone who should know you, or at least know that you exist. This happened on a call yesterday morning! (I had to edit 'dumba**') Edited by JHagerman 2008-09-30 1:32 PM |

I do not have a DNR - good lord I'm only 26! My DPA outlines my end of life decisions - who my designated health care agents are and how to contact them. It also lists my alergies. I also have decided to refuse certain products and procedures - I trust first responders to do their job! After I get dropped off at the hospital it is nice to know that me road Id can talk for me. As for your comment about lawyers - I truly believe that the individual has a right to decide what gets put into their bodies! |
