I'm thinking about signing up for this!! It would be my first and I am sooo inspired by by that video. Do you think it's too much for a first timer? I currently run and swim and spin-but no outdoor biking...help!!

I think the course is supposed to be pretty flat which would likely make it easier for a beginner.

This race is extremely beginner friendly.  The bike is a two-loop course with no technical aspects.  It is basically flat with a couple of inclines (not enough to be called a hill).

e-mail Michele, the RD ([email protected]). She has plenty of groups in the area that are training for the race and she can hook you up.

There is the Ambler Running Club that meets up in the Spring House area. (309 & Norristown Rd/Sumneytown Pike)  The only problem is that their slowest pace group is 11 min/mile, which is why I haven't joined up with them.  (I'm slow.)

If you get excited/nervous and need some help, let me know.  While I'm by no means a fast or highly experienced triathlete, I know some things about being a triathlete.  (I'm entering my third season.)  I live in Hatboro, so we could meet up and talk about training and stuff.

I live in Montgomeryville so does MissBethy. Where are you at? MissBethy did this race last year or the year before I think. Since so many of you BT'rs are doing it I might volunteer if I don't have some other race.

Does this Tri use the same course at the Philly Tri?

This is a MOST encouraging thread.  I'm new at Tri-ing (and will be 70 next month), so I OWN "slow."

But -- weather permitting, I'm planning to drive down and bike the course on 3/13 and/or the afternoon of 3/15.  Any takers?

This is a GREAT race for a beginner. I did it in 2007 as my first race and had SO much fun ... and became hooked. Last year it was the first of a three race season! The energy, encouragement and enthusiasm from all of the women organizing and participating in the race really is what makes it! And ... it is a very flat course, which also helps! I was intimidated by the whole biking thing because I only had a mountain bike that I didn't really know how to use very technically. You do see all kinds of bikes at this race, but I NEVER was made to feel self-conscious about my bike. Often during the race other women called out words of encouragement (as they passed me ;-}) that helped push me along!

I think you should GO FOR IT!

Hey there!!!! Did you ever get together with someone from the site to train with??? You are going to do fine-we'll be together the whole time. The feeling of finishing a tri is incredible-can't wait for you to experience that!!!

Kelly (your sister who is coming up from Florida to do this race with you)

Hi all!

This will be my first tri and I'm trying to figure out the whole wetsuit thing. I've read the USAT rules, so now I'm just trying to determine July Schuylkill River temperatures and whether or not I should invest in a suit.  Any suggestions or advice?

Also, I was a competitive swimmer in high school, but I'm a bit nervous about the open water swim.  I have very little experience swimming in open water, so any suggestions or advice on this would be much appreciated as well!

thanks all! I'm so excited!

The water in each of the last few years has been just below 78. Wet suit legal but certainly not cold.

As far as open water swimming my first piece of advice is always...if you can swim...you can swim anywhere! Pool, ocean, lake, river...doesn't matter. You might lose a little time because you're not used to sighting without a black line to follow but that's no reason to panic. A few seconds, or even a minute lost in the swim, is something you can make up later in the race.

Expect some contact with other swimmers. They aren't doing it on purpose, it's just the nature of the sport. Again, don't let it panic you. If your goggles get knocked off, just compose yourself and fix them. If you get caught swimming right next to someone and keep bumping into on another, just swim about 5 yards wide and you should be ok.

Hope this helps.
