Is anyone doing the full this year?

I've done the half probably 6-7 times and the full once--it was my first full (it was also my first half, actually first race ever).

That last 10k is very discouraging but I am considering making this my fall marathon. I have dropped my time since my first 4 yrs ago by a little over a half hour. So maybe I would fare better this time.

I've had Chickamauga (did last year and pr'd) and Rocket City on my radar but I don't think I will be in top form for Chickamauga. And well, Rocket City I don't know if I want to spend the money to travel, get a hotel room and then possibly have a crappy race (not feeling too confident since SC HALF last weekend). I also just don't know if I like how far off it is. Mid December sounds a long way off.

I really want to break 3:30 for the marathon (need to lose 7+ minutes) but more importantly I just want to run one. Atlanta is just awfully convienent. I mean, I can sleep in my own bed and only get up 30 minutes before I usually do and drive to the race. My whole family lives here and the kids are out of school so I can have a long weekend to relax. Oh, and my mom is making this big giant meal that day.

But then again, that last 10k, all uphill . . . I keep saying I just want a marathon where I don't have to run uphill in the last miles. Yet I keep doing hilly marathons.

Then again, is it really a PR if I run it on an "easier" course??? Meeting my goal on a "hard" course would make it even sweeter. . . .

I could do the full and if it is crappy still do Rocket City (unless is sells out) . . .

Just thinking out loud. What to do what to do.  . . .

Unless you bike to the race, I don't think your run on the SCHIM would be indicative of your performance on a marathon almost 2 months from now.

You're a strong runner. I referred to you as my "running idol" just this week. You put in the training. I think you could run the Atlanta and PR. Love the hill, embrace the hill.

LOl, on the bike part. I did briefly consider that I could spend the night at my sister's (she lives intown) and ride my bike to the start and then ride back to their house.

You are being way too generous with me Lauren but I appreciate the props and I'll take 'em and put them in my pocket for keeps.

I have been trying to embrace the hill FOREVER. Maybe the thing to do is to go runTHE HILL  in training. I would love to kick Peachtree's hilly one of these days that is for sure.

I don't know..I've run the half the last eight years in a row and have never been tempted to do the full, reasons being the half is the perfect pre-food orgy distance, and the course is so darned uninspired.

In Re PR but on an easier course: Does it count? Heck yeah it does.

Hubby is running the full, I'm running the half.  It's our annual event (plus the Ptree).  I actually don't mind the last part of the race, I guess I'm so used to running on Peachtree.  Nat, you live and run in such a hilly area, wouldn't it be great to PR this race to use to compare future races? It would be an awesome PR to do it on a hilly course

Wow! You really do jump in with both feet! You truly are hardcore. I am contemplating it depending how I can rebuild back up these next few weeks and how long registrations stays open. I will probably decide after the silver comet half( if I do that even). Other then my back, my legs felt good doing a 4.5 mile run so I am optimistic on my chances, but being really careful to listen to my body

I agree about the half. That was why it was the only race I ever did for years. I never gain that "holiday" weight because of it.  The uninspiring course doesn't bother me since I know I can have my ipod. I did swear after I did it that I would never the full again but for the past 2 years I keep thinking about. I actually registered for the full last year but stepped it down to the half because I had bronchitis.

I know. This is what I keep thinking. But I am not sure if I am as  fast as I was last year. 3:37 at Chickamuaga--and that is a much less hilly course. But then again 3:38 at ING in March so maybe. But I still think Atlanta is a more difficult course than ING. . .

I am half way to being talking into. But St. Jude's also popped up on my radar.  . .

I am not hardcore--I just don't really think enough before I do.

I have been training for some fall marathon since the end of July--along with the HIM training so switching gears shouldn't be to bad. This is why I was so freaked out during the run portion because I thought I was causing permanant injury to myself. But my feet seem better. I got in 13 miles yesterday in the morning and then a 5k recovery run late afternoon. 2nd run actually felt better than the first.  I biked and swam today and am hoping I can go long tomorrow but I am playing it by ear.  .  .

Be careful with your back. Do you do any core work?? I find it makes a huge difference for me.

I will be at Silver Comet. Got my # @ Big Peach on Wed.

I know I need to do core work. It is one of the things on my list to work on in the tri off season.

My back didnt bother me really during the run, but it did afterwards. I am going to a chiropractor who is also a triathlete tomorrow to see what she can do for me.

I had initially been training to also do Chickamagua, but decided that was too much. I did get in several runs over 13 miles. I am hoping to get in at least one 20 miler in the next month and then take it really easy during the full.

Good on the Dr. Good you are thinking about core work. No do it!

Are you doing the full on Thanksgiving or another ? I agree that Chick would be too soon but keep it on your radar. It is great race.

If I do a full before next year, it will be Atlanta.

Chickamagua was my original plan, but I backed off on that to focus on the 70.3. I have only heard good things about it.

So if everything goes well I will do Atlanta(though I am not going to push it). If it doesnt, I will recover a little longer then start training in November for either Snickers or ING. Which one will depend on my wife. If she thinks she can build up for the half, we are probably going to do snickers since its rather flat. Otherwise I'll probably do ING.

I need to find a good core training plan. I have two books which I dont particularly like their premade plan, so I need to kindof adapt them to one plan. That and I need to get back to being serious about my eating. When I focus and eat right, I can easily lose weight. I figure I need to lose at least another 20-30 pounds

Well we are just having our own private chat. Ryan is off killing bambi and the kids are watching a movie and ignoring me  so I am sucked in the internet vortex on Friday night. So sad.

Atlanta, I think, is a tough race but you can always opt for the half at the expo so it is not biggie. I say go ahead and register for the full. I will say it is really low key and you will be alone for a lot of the race if you do the full. I am okay with this but a lot people aren't.

I want to do Snicker's too.  It was on my plan last year but I had pnuemonia in Dec and then struggled with calf issues in Jan so I didn't get my training back on track until Feb so opted to do ING and then did country music 4 weeks later (with disasterous results).

I don't have a core plan to offer you. I use to lift weights--focusing on upper body--arms, chest, back and abs. I ignored the legs since I am so muscular there already. But since I started xt with bike and swim last year I just do yoga and occaisionally some push ups/situps if I am feeling crazy.

And judging from the pictures on you blog and seeing you in person it looks like you have done phenomonal job with the weightloss already. I know from experience though (having to had to drop weight from having 2 kids) that being lighter on your feet makes a HUGE difference in running speed and endurance and most of all, those aches and pains.

Yeah, I am definitely in for the Atlanta full. I figured if it doesn't work  out (injury, not trained, bad race etc) I can still sign up and do Rocket City or another race in Feb like Tybee or just wait until Snickers.

I am going to try for 3:30 and I plan on running positive splits since --knowing the course--an even or a negative split will just be impossible.

I ran the half last year but will be out of town at relatives this year.

I was thinking about Tybee or Myrtle Beach to try to BQ this year but now Tybee is canceled I will have to focus on Myrtle Beach with the GA ING as a backup.

A little bit out of the time frame being discussed and definitely a bit further away, but B of A Tampa Bay Gasparilla mary on March 1 is where I'm going for my BQ..Flat/Fast/Right time of the year:

Is there still a marathon at Hilton Head in the late Winter?

Well that is bad news about Tybee. Why did they cancel it?

How far is Tampa? I think snicker's is closer and they will have that bike race.

I have already BQ'd and might do Boston this spring but now we have a family trip to New Orleans in the spring so funds may not (yet again! Bq'd for the last 3 years and still haven't run it) be available for a Boston trip. So I just have to keep qualifying.

How long is my GA ING qualifer good for? Just this year right?

A boston Qualifier is good for two Boston Marathon's. So ING was good for 08, and 09.

Let's not lose sight of the real goal.. to get you sub 3:30.
