Subject: How to pedal correctly??

So i'm working on pulling up with my legs and not with my calfs and its  NOT easy.

I now realize that a perfectly fitted bike is a must if I am to continue to excel at the pefect pedal stroke.

My questions are:

What is the proper position for achieving the best pedal stroke while in Aero postion?  I am having problems keeping a good stroke going and wonder if my position is flawed.

Also what is the best position while sitting up to achieve the best pedal stroke?

Pictures and or links to a website with info is very much appreciated.

-Ben

There is no such thing as a perfect pedal stroke.

You will find endless debates on it, and products out there designed to capitalize on each different part of the debate (Q Rotor chainrings, Powercranks, etc.).

Don't over analyze. Just pedal. I never consciously pull up in the stroke unless I'm doing a standing climb, and maybe a seated climb.

Pulling up on every stroke allows me to run much faster, Pushing down allows me to bike faster, (when i say pushing down I mean pulling up on the pedal using more of my calf and knees instead of my quads) watching the olympics you see power bikers like Matt reed, (well not in the olympics but in some other events) totally rock on the bike but fade away on the run.  Whereas the top finishers in the olympics had perfect pedal strokes which propelled them into 5 minute mile machines.

Does anyone have a good guide or something talking on pedal strokes and proper bike fitting in accordance to legs/ foot placement?

as the previous two posters stated, there is no evidence there is one or a proper technique way for efficient pedalling. In fact some of the studies available exhibit that amateur (beginners) athletes can become as efficient as professionals withing weeks of training by just riding. The best athelets at the Olympics or any triathlon for that matter are those who were fitter and execute the best on that given day. Pedalling technique has most likely no impact on who wins or loses a Triathlon race.

I asked a similar question and the answer given to me was to pretend your foot on the pedal was a clock.  Top was 12, bottom was 6.  Once you get that image, you should be focusing on pedaling from 3 to 9, going thru those positions on the clock.

No dude, we're serious. Just ride lots and pedal. Don't waste time over thinking it.

However, if you want to:

*EDIT*

OK, the only time I would say to think about the pedals stroke is during a seated climb. Push down with your leg but push THROUGH the bottom of the stroke with a plantar flexion of the ankle. That will allow a little more push through. However this is not as effective or easily done when you're at 90+ cadence.

sooo...you are seeking free pro-level coaching and advice from an American-based beginner forum...because you know we're all high level olympic International distance racers here? Gotcha.

So let me get this straight ....... you've got two different USAC (USA Cycling) coaches telling you the same thing, and you don't believe them???

Efficiency in pedaling comes the same way efficient running happens.  With time and experience doing the exercise.

How bad can a persons pedal stroke be, really?  Just do what feels natural and you're 99% of the way there.  For the amateur athlete the biggest thing you can do to improve performance is to increase your fitness = ride lots (which will also result in improved pedal efficiency).

If you mention Powercranks twice more on this thread, you will reach the legal limit, and I think we'll have a ST immigration to watch the show that develops.

And an AC sighting can't be far behind.

I've done some Computrainer/Spin Scan sessions with my coach which have helped my pedaling technique.  I had some significant imbalance issues that we were able to identify and correct.  Pedaling is not unlike your swim stroke or golf swing.  Once you know what good technique "feels" like you need the repetition out on the road to reinforce it and build muscle memory.

Well, we've got Tom D. over here, but I seriously doubt (hope and pray) that we don't end up with the usual Day vs. Coggan argument.  We like to keep things civil over here, remember?

LMAO!!! You did know Kemper was the ITU #1 and champion just a few years ago right? You do know Potts is the current 70.3 champion right?

But as I said, don't let us change your mind. Focus on pedalling techique a lot, that will help you win your next race. Running fitness or execution has nothing to do how fast you can run off the bike
