Yeah, but's like that everywhere in corporate America - my sister works like 14 hour days and orders lunch and dinner in. People work from the crack of dawn til late at night and don't really leave for lunch. It's just the way it is. Only with "hourly" folk is it really enforced cuz no one wants to pay for overtime. Or unions. But most office jobs aren't unionized. Exactly. Fired, no. Not promoted or given a raise because it looks like you don't work hard enough? Yes. I would be looking for another job for sure! |

But regardless, that's not how people operate here. Like the one day I came in at...gasp...8:40, they had the IT guy rifling through my computer. And I asked my boss why they couldn't just wait until I came in, esp. since I ALWAYS come in earlier than 9. I said that technically my hours were 9 to 6, and that I was in no way late to work. She was like "Well, technically mine are too..." implying that those numbers don't actually matter, that we are supposed to be here basically all the time. But I'm not going to be a friggin' martyr for my cause and stay here until 7:30-8pm every night. |

Yeah but management would need to specifically communicate that to you, if they were not happy with your performance. Like in a review, they would need to say "Wurkit, we feel you are not putting in the hours required to do your job effectively" or whatever. Then she could clarify that she was expected to work 12 hour days instead of the 8 hour days she thought she would be working when hired on. They have to tell you, they can't just expect you to be a mind-reader. Especially when you're getting the job done. |

Subject: RE: TAN #51: TAN and Deliver Rynamite - 2008-10-10 1:31 PM I disagree. Sometimes there is just more work required than can be done in that amount of time, no matter how good of a worker you are. Able to delegate? Maybe... but sometimes there isn't someone that the work can be delegated to. Especially in a business that's growing really fast and under-manned. When we were super-busy, the first year I was working here, that's how it was. It was ALWAYS busy. So it would have been ridiculous for me to "stay until all of my work was done" - I'd never get to go home, as there was ALWAYS stuff to be done. But I always finished all of the stuff that HAD to be done that day, before I left and just plugged away at other projects until they were finished (less important, more clerical stuff). Now it's not so busy - it comes in spurts, because the market is so dead and we aren't getting much new business, just in general. That's part of the reason why we're going overseas - apparently, the markets in India and Dubai are hot. |

Hey, I don't btitch to anyone here. I come in early and never leave early and I say nothing about it - except on TAN The biggest thing right now is that it's pretty dead, as far as work goes. Seriously. We are sloooooowww right now, it's not even funny. In general, the architecture field isn't doing well. I know a couple of other folks at different firms whose firms are down to a handful of people. We've made some more layoffs lately, too. |

Subject: RE: TAN #51: TAN and Deliver Rynamite - 2008-10-10 1:41 PM I'd LOVE to be hourly again. Dang, that'd be great. I'd make so much frickin money because I'd be here alllllllllllllll the time. x2. I have VERY little incentive to like my job or want to be here all dang day. Since there is nowhere higher for me to go in this company (since the dept is 2 people and I am the top of the 2 - if you don't count my boss, who is actually the CFO), and they didn't give us bonuses this summer, so I doubt much of a raise is going to be given to anyone, much less people who work hard. And I'm not making nearly enough to warrant staying here for 10-12 hours. If they would let me come in at my usual time and leave at like 5, I'd skip lunch break most days, or just take 30 minutes, work all day and leave and be happier. I am considering, if I don't get fired or find something else, at my annual review at the end of January, asking them if I can readjust my hours - the position I'm in used to be 8 to 5, and my old position 9-6 - that way there was always someone here in case we needed to bow to the crazy whim of the pres. 8-5 would be MUCH better for me, cuz then I could train and be happy and not miserable. And of course, I'd stay late if there was a deadline. That is fine - that happens, and thankfully, not very often. My admin is here from 9 to 6 every day, so it'd be fine. But I don't like saying I don't live to work, because it seems to imply that I don't work hard. Which isn't the case. I'm just not a slave to my job. And if I liked my job more, I wouldn't mind as much. |

Though if for some reason crazy admin leaves early, I will sneak out behind her. Thankfully, CFO is too busy these days to notice much of anything. But crazy admin watches everyone like a hawk and reports "bad behavior" to anyone she can - including the pres. Which is part of the reason why I stick to working the hours I do. She's gotten people fired in the past, so I don't trust her. |
