Ding ding we have a winner.  That calculation has been done before and it is supported in many of the books on swimming.

I would like to thank everybody for helping with my question. This is a great web site. Hands relaxed, slightly apart and not cupped unless you are the Thorpe chap on you tube. Thanks again everybody.

I think we've reached some agreement about swimming with your hands relaxed and fingers slightly apart. In addition, a relaxed hand can help maintain a relaxed forearm, elbow and shoulder.

What about that all-elusive "feel"? Think about petting your dog or cat, what gives you the best feel of that coat, fingers together or slightly apart?

Just as long as it's not heavy

Then we have issues.

As a former Varsity swimmer, I am 110% in the hands relaxed and fingers slightly apart camp.  Make sure you finish your stroke (i.e. hands pull past hips) and bend at the elbow and you'll be golden!
