Will the "half" bike loop be obvious and well marked?  Thoughts?

Kevin, Is this what you saw?

QUARTERMAN Bike Course:

Full loop (loop 1) - Starting from the South side of Tempe Town Lake, athletes will exit the transition area facing west.  Go west on Rio Salado, north on Priest, east on the service drive of the 202, North on Center, west on Washington and south on Priest.  Then head east on Rio Salado.  South on McClintock to University.  Turn around and head north back to Rio. Go east to Loop 101, Turn around and head west back to Rural.  Head north on Rural to the turnaround then back to Rio.  At Rio you will head west back towards Mill.  At Mill you will go north to Curry.  Go east on Curry to College.  Head north on college to the turnaround, taking you back to Curry. Take Curry west to Mill and head north to the turnaround that will take you south on Mill to Rio.  On Rio you will head west back towards transition.

Modified loop (loop 2) – Similar to loop 1, athletes will head west on Rio Salado, north on Priest, east on the service drive of the 202, North on Center, west on Washington and south on Priest. On your second loop, you turn around at Curry, taking Mill Ave south back to Rio.  Head west on Rio back to transition to rack your bike and head out on the run!

Quarterman athletes will complete 1 full loop + 1 modified loop.

Negative. "Quarterman athletes will complete 1 full loop + 1 modified loop." The quarterman bike course is one full loop, and one partial loop, U-Turning on Mill at Curry. http://www.redrockco.com/files/Soma%20Quarter%20Bike%202008.jpg

So do we need to have this memorized or will there be people directing or what?

They had people directing last year. It's pretty obvious on the second loop. You just don't do that loopy section up by Curry a second time and instead just hold the hammer down to transition.

I'm so excited because my already crappy l33t b1k3 sk1lz have been eroded by a lack of road time
and this course is now almost technical.

As long as you know the hand-signals for "U-turning." Otherwise, you're sure to get t-boned in the left side.

You DO know that hand-signal, right???

I want to see you doing that all 9 times before the race is over.

Did they switch the swim wave starts too?  I thought the site previously said that the 1/4 people started first (It didn't make sense to me) - - but now they've got the HIM people first.

I'm curious why you think it's better? Means more people on an already crowded bike course for longer.

Doesn't matter though...I'm still racing.

Yeah I felt at first that was stupid of them, however, if the half starts first then the quarter then there will be more bikers on the course all at the same time. It going to get messes with all of the pointies heads yelling at the newbies

Thats just silly. On the other point we start first haha

On a 90 degree+ day every minute counts when you are racing a half. Not to discount what the quarter athletes are doing out there but they will be done FAR before the heat rises. THAT is why they should be out on the course first. Last year Tanya went in the water nearly an HOUR after me, that hour could be 3-4 degrees.

Its a LARGE loop, the bike course won't be too crowded just because half athletes are out there first and at some point pretty much everyone is on the course as it is. I did the quarter last year (early start) but rode the 56 miles (long story, but YES on purpose) and the bike course was far from crowded.

I am also very happy that they changed my swim start- purely selfish reasons, because of the heat but also so my family can watch me race before they have to head back home for a soccer game

Javamom: I did the quarterman last year and it was very obvious where the half loop was, they also have tons of volunteers out on the course

There was a lot of worry/complaining about the bike course last year- myself included! But it all worked out great on the day. It will be fun, looks like the weather will be perfect and it's an awesome opportunity to see some great elite athletes race!

And please dont judge me by the shape of my helmet

Ah. Heat management for the Half. Makes sense. Wasn't thinking of that perspective.

It is sad to say that The Chances for Children Tri in july was better thought out then this. I will race and do my best. I will then complain and blame all my short coming on the course and everyone but me. I am greatfull to have scape goat for my short comings.

I am trying to see this in a positive light.

Don't judge it before you do it. Most people had a sh*t fit about it last year and had a BLAST on race day (other than the heat). Think POSITIVE!
