Subject: A little pat on my own back!!! 7:15 mile

I wanna pat myself on the back here, i hope ya'll don't mind.  I started running in the beginning of August, i weighed 258lbs, i was unable to run 200 yards and i was lucky to get in a 14 minute mile, with quite a bit of pain i might add. I then strained/tore my left calf and was out of commission for 2 weeks in early September, right around the time of my first Tri. I walked all 2.2 miles of that race(micro sprint) and finished the run portion in somwhere around 27 minutes, if you read my race report you will understand that fiasco. I resumed running about a week after that race and have been running 3-4 times a week, since the middle of September. Well..... this morning i ran a negative split run (my running partner was having a bad day) and my last mile of my morning 5k was a 7:15 mile!!!!!!! for a total time of 31 mins and change. My goal is sub 30's for now, but a 7:15 gives me the confidence that i will break that shortly. My weight is 238-240 and it has plateaued for a little while now, but my waist is down from a tight 38 comfy 40 to a comfy 36!!! I wanna pat myself on the back for making significant improvements in the last 2 months and i would like to thank everyone on this site for the inspiration they have given me in the last two months, including my challenge teammates of the Wicked Werewolves and Team Horny Melons!!!!

Thank you all!!!!

Rudy

Great work Rudy, a 7:15 mile is VERY fast for us big boys.  You will definitely break 30:00 on your next 5K if you can run at that pace.  There are lots of "pumkin runs" sunday, you should slap sown your $20 and PR.  PS: Make sure to keep the long runs up this winter.

Well Done!  Congratulations on your excellent 7:15 mile, and for putting that crushing race experience behind you.  Good luck in your 5K PR effort--success is soooo close.  I am sure it will motivate you to keep it up during the off-season.  You will bust out of the gates raring to go this spring.  Best of luck.

WOW wtg, and it will only get better 8). Don't worry about the weight too much, just don't hit the candy and keep upping the vollume. You will probably stall every 5 pounds for a while then drop another 5.

Congrats on your achievement! You are making great progress.

Curious as to how you timed your splits. If it was with a Garmin, it could be wildly inaccurate. My Garmin has given me splits for 5:10 miles and I'm not capable of running anything remotely close to that. It recetly gave me a split of 6:26 for the last mile of a half marathon and while I could possibly run that fast for a single mile, it's very doubtful I ran that fast at the end of a half. Hopefully your split timing came from something more accurate.

Awesome

The nature of the 5k is that it is very difficult to replicate race results in a non-race setting. If your doing a 7:15 mile in a training run, I might suggest that a Sub-30 5k is very much in the bag.

Keep up the great running.

7:15 is great. Sounds like you just need to gain some more confidence/fitness so you can go faster at the beginning of your 5k seeing how you had that much left for the last mile.

That is sweet.  Conratulations.  Sounds like you have come a long way in 3 months.  At 240 lbs, to go that fast, that soon, it is really an accomplishment.

Please be cautious however.  I started running many a times, experienced success, but then continued to push myself too hard so that I could keep improving at the same rate, always resulted in failure, dissapointment, and me quiting, sometimes with a mild injury.  I started around 250 and I found I had to be super duper duper careful with the running.  I do not want to make you paranoid or anything, but it sucked bad to make that progress and then have it taken away from me just because I was a little greedy and pushed my body to hard.

Again, conratulations, and keep it up.

Agreed. If you can run a 7:15 during training, a 30-minute 5k is not a very lofty goal. I'd shoot for the low 20's. Way to go!
