Total Time = 3h 51m 46s
Overall Rank = 356/390
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 55/59
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15 to get ready. Just think Tanya was probably parking in the garage at this time. Drove to the race with Ken.
Event warmup:

Hung out with some cool kids. Just relaxed.
Swim
  • 27m 52s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was barely in the water when the horn sounded. I understand the guy has a schedule to keep but it was not our fault that we were not in the water. The swim was the usual. Some kicking, tugging etc. I improved 5 minutes from last year. I am still not very fast but am much more comfortable in the water. I see all kinds of people resting and doing different strokes. I rounded the last bouy to turn home and not one but two people were doing ths back float sort of thing. I was like come on, take that to the outside not right at the bouy.
What would you do differently?:

I felt pretty good considering I have not been swimming on a regular basis.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

The wetsuit strippers saved me about 5 minutes here. I was going great until I had to wipe the dry grass off my feet to put on my socks. I have gotten much better at running and jumping on my bike and going.

Comments:

I'm right there with PJ on this. I stink at the bike. I just simply do not have enough experience. Just when I forgot about the expansion joint on Scottsdale; Boom! Although there were several u turns. I actually liked the course. I also liked the refs that were incognito. I was rollin down McClintock when this Harley is driving behind me. The whole time I was thinking some cop should get him off the course until he made the u-turn and I saw the ref with a notepad in his hand. It was great to see Cactus Steve out there taking pics
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

I'm much better at this. I have learned to ride with my feet on top jsut before the last turn. I now just hop off and go. Funny. I got to my rack and this guy next to me is in T2. The whole time his wife is yacking at him. I was thinking the guy just wants you to shut up so he can move on with his life. I was getting tired of her.
What would you do differently?:

Run
  • 1h 26m
  • 6.55 miles
  • 13m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

I was'nt sure what to expect considering the last time I ran 6+ miles was the Disney half way back on Labor Day. I did a lot of walking and some running for the first three miles. I then decided I should get going. I ran up on Cody at about 4.5 and paced him to the finish. The out and back did not seem as bad this year. That was nice.
What would you do differently?:

Just train some more. Some bricks would help.
Post race
Warm down:

The slip and slide was fun. Getting out of the slip and slide not as fun. Just hung out and talked to a few friends including Sue Berlinger the owner of Sweat magazine.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training and the heat. It was 90 degrees.

Event comments:

Another fun race. The race had some kids bouncing thingys at the finish. This kept my daughter and her friends entertained during the race.

Nice race Rick!  Huge improvement over last year with the whole rushed-start as well.

You were looking good on the run when I saw you somewhere around the 1/2 way point.  I'm glad we got to hang out at the pre-soma lunch as well...very fun.

Rick - your swim would've been much better if not for the way we started and where we were. Great job. For someone who claims to be training on a limited basis, you still put a solid effort out there. Good race!

Way to go out there Rick! Despite an "interesting" start with the swim, you had an awesome race!
