Subject: Shoes for Supinators?

Folks,

I am a severe supinator. I have been using Mizuno Wave Creation as my running shoes and I like them, but they do not last. I wear the heels out right through the wave plates in about 350 miles. My podiatrist recommended New Balance 877s. I tried these and wore through the heels in 121 miles. I know supinators are less common than pronators, but has anyone found a durable shoe for a heel striking supinator? I am tired of the $109 expenditure every 3 months.

350 miles is not a bad amount to get out of a shoe. typically they are going to get you somewhere between the 350-500 range. if you have a heavier build, or wear your shoes for things other than running, they will wear out much faster (at 220 lbs, ive started noticing some calf flareups at approx. 130 miles, which for me means time for a new pair) if you are happy with the mizuno's, go online and find them at a discounted price rather than going to your running store to buy them every time. especially now that the new versions will be coming out soon, you can get the current ones at a much better price. good luck

I'm a severe supinator and use new balance 8508s.  They usually last me 350-400 miles.  I just tend to kill shoes very quickly.

imo 350-miles is not bad for a supinator.  I supinate and tend to strick my toes and then roll to the outside.  I've been running like this for over 20-years and have tried countless times to correct this problem with no success.  That's just my form.  Anyway, you are doing better than I am as I only get about 250-300 miles before the rubber at the toe is wore out. And I am not heavy either...170 pounds! I have been running with the Brooks Addiction for the past several years because they provide good stability...but they don't last much longer than 3-months.

Well I'm only 150 lbs. and I'm lucky to get 300 miles out of my shoes due to my supination. I wear out the toes before the rest of the shoe shows any wear. I'm currently running in Pearl Izumi Surge which has worn much better than my other shoes. They currently have 270 miles on them and I may get another 100 if I'm lucky!

Thanks for the input. I agree 350 miles is not terrible, but always looking for something better.

Hmm..that's interesting, cuz I was always under the impression that supinators should be in a neutral shoe. A stability shoe has medial support...meaning on the inner side of the shoe...how will that help somebody that is rolling outward? If anything, I would think it might cause them to supinate even more, no?

That's my opinion too and it was reinforced when I had my gait analyzed.. I switched to ASICS Cumulus and ASICS nimbus. Really liked the Cumulus 8's and the Cumulus 10's so far are great. Yes, the stability "bar" on the instep keeps the foot from rolling in even more.

I have tried the motion control shoes NB and they felt OK, but did not allow me to roll even a little bit in so they wore out in 121 miles. I am definitely in favor of the neutral shoe theory.

350 miles and lasting for 3 months isn't a problem- that's about how long they should last if you are running that much.  Also, you shouldn't walk around with them on afterwards, go to the store, etc. as those miles count as part of a shoe's miles.  I have read that the shoes themselves ideally need at least 24 hours between runs, if not longer, to fully rebound from the effects of all of the pounding.  So you might want to buy two pairs of shoes once you have found something you like- you may get a bit more life out of them that way.

I'm also a supinator and I've been using Nike Air Pegasus for several years. I've found them to be more durable than other shoes I've tried. I get around 400 miles out of them, or about 6 weeks at my current higher mileage running. I don't race in them, I just use them for my daily training runs.

Make sure you get a NEUTRAL shoe with lots of cushioning. The stability shoes like the Adrenaline are made for people who overpronate or roll in. The medial post in the stability shoe and the motion control shoes will roll you more to the outside. Since you roll out you need the neutral. No one that I am aware of makes an underpronator/supinator shoe. I supinate also and have been rotating between the Mizuno Wave Rider and the newer Saucony Ride both with a SofSole Athlete insole for extra cushion. I have had a lot of comfortable miles in these. You may also try the adidas Supernova Cushion or the adiStar Cushion. The adidas line up tends to be a little softer than most for cushioning for which you'll give up a little response. Good luck in your search.

Me too. I also agree that 350 miles sounds pretty good. I've gotten 400 out of mine and then they were pretty much toast. I use Nike Structure. Only shoe I've ever used that worked. If you're anything like me, stay far, far away from anything Reebok. Just walking made my feet hurt.

The good thing is Structure is not an expensive shoe either. Can definitely find it for under $100.

Well...yes, normally low arches would dictate wearing a stability shoe. But since you have low arches and also supinate (like the OP), that complicates things. My feet are kinda screwy too...I pronate more on my right foot, but supinate more on my left...how's that for messed up feet?

This has been the most informational thread I've read in awhile!  I also have flat feet, but due to painful bunions, and then bunionectomies, have become a major supinator.  I did a gait analysis and was put in neutral + shoes.  First I tried a pair of Sauconys, then Nike, then the Asics Gel Nimbus 9s.  I stuck with Nimbus 9s through 6 or 7 pairs...the first few lasted ~100 miles.  The later pairs I had 2 going at a time so as to give more time in between runs and was able to get closer to 200 miles before getting shin pain.  Now I have a pair of the new Gel Nimbus 10s, and they are too tight around the surgical site (bunionectomy) on my right foot since it still swells when I run...now I am looking for another neutral + shoe, with more room in the toe box like the 9s had....

This thread gave me some idea of what to look at.

Another shoe to throw into the mix that I like as a supinator is the Brooks Glycerin.   I have tried several other shoes and the Brooks feel the best of any.  And I think you are really lucky getting 350 miles out of a shoe.  The best I have ever gotten from any shoe is about 200 and that is from the Brooks.   I have a very high arch and I am i mid foot striker.  I have go through shoes way too fast.

I am a supinator with a low arch.  Last week I went to the running store for new shoes and ended up with Saucony Progrid Ride (a neutral shoe).  So far so good.  Before I had Mizuno Wave Creations and they were ok, the new ones feel a lot better though.

I second what several people have already said about neutral/cushion shoes being the appropriate type for the typical supinator (high rigid arch mid to forefoot striker).  It seems unusual for a heel striker with a flat arch to roll to the outside of the foot...I don't understand the biomechanics of that.  It would however seem that a stability/motion control shoe would compound rather than counteract such a motion.

I'm lucky to get 150 miles out of a pair of shoes before the outside of the forefoot is worn to the foam and visibly compressed while the heal has no wear whatsoever.

My opinion is that the expensive top of the line shoes offer no benefit to someone with form like mine.  The shoe companies tend to focus  all their gadgetry on the heel where it does many of us no good.  I used to run in nimbus then switched to cumulus to save money and have found no difference in wear or performance.  I bought 5 pair of cumulus on closeout for $40/pair a few months ago.  Now I've got 2 pair left.....I wish I'd bought 20pr.

I did not catch the part about the flat feet and supinating. Check out the Brooks Dyad - a neutral shoe for people with flat feet

Wow, I just joined this site and find this blog so informative.

I am a supinator with high arches..have been running in mizuno wave creations...like them a lot but was looking to switch things up. I used to run in nikes..had a lot less injuries then (one of my coaches took be off them) now i have a new coach and i can run in whatever i want.

Any suggestions on a nike show for supinators with high arches?

I'm a big-time supinator and I was previously in the Asics Nimbus and had luck with that. Currently I use the Asics Hyperspeed b/c I've made the move to a lower heeled running shoe. I heartily recommend the Hyperspeed if you are a supinator b/c it is neutral and doesn't force your foot into an uncomfortable and unnatural position like a stability shoe will. Also, I think that the smaller heel in it works in your favor (once you get used to it) if you roll to the outside b/c it doesn't feel as impactful as on the more heavily cushioned neutral shoes.
