Let's storm the base!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

um, yeah, Paul, I'm right behind you.  What size bike were you riding again?  Once I get the bullet riden saddle replaced it might be a little small

I agree. Those guys have been storming the middle east for the last few years, so I think you and a few bikers is going to be no challenge. a 100mm shell, and ... well you can guess what happens.

Good luck!

On the more serious side, did I see like 5 weeks of training left for this race!

WOW, she's coming up fast, and I better start doing some cycling in my training.

Wow ... I can't believe it, we're closing in on 1 month out. Planning to get some good climbing in on the bike these next couple of weeks.  Any big training plans this next couple of weeks?

I'm dead in the water this weekend since I have to work 14 hour days, but starting next month I'm hopping on ridding more at lake mead and red rock canyon hopefully. I have to start training hills or I'm a dead man on the back side.

What about you?

I've got a long bike and run planned, some trainer work, track workout and a swim left this week. This is my biggest volume week in my training plan.  I'll be ready for my recovery week on Monday.

Has this become my life?

Almost every day I ask myself that as I wake up at 4, drive the long commute to near work, swim as long as I can and then head to work at 6. Then I come home and get out and run, or spend hours on my trainer.

I'm tired but so excited.

As for the LA TRI Feb 28th ride, we won't be going on the official course. However we will be riding at 56mi ride / 6mi run brick in Palos Verdes at 8am. And I will for sure be there!

Hope everyone is doing well. I haven't been on this site in ages.

I had an excellent one.  Probably my last 56 miler before Oceanside, since I'm doing the Toyota Desert Tri next weekend and will be getting into taper after that.  I hammered on the bike Saturday and was right on my target time with plenty of legs left under me afterwards.  Did a couple of shorter rides as well, and cranked out a 2 mile open water swim Sunday afternoon with great splits.  I'll probably just focus on my run for the remaining few weeks and make sure I maintain my swim/bike base.  I'm feeling as prepared as I could have hoped for as the date gets closer.

So-So weekend.  I've developed a blister on my foot and had to cancel my Saturday run.  But I did get out for a 70-mile ride yesterday.  And my weight is now within 1 pound of my race goal.

Got into the ocean on Saturday. It was good to be in the open water. The water temp was 57 degrees, but not bad at all. If Oceanside Harbor is anywhere near that on race day it will be ok.

Hoping on doing a ride this Saturday starting from the Anaheim Amtrak station going down the coast to either Oceanside (62 miles) or Solana Beach (80 miles). The weather is calling for showers for the weekend though.

I've been debating back and forth for my taper. My plan says 2 weeks but I'm wondering if I should taper for 3. I know I should trust my plan but I'm really concerned about being rested and ready. Thoughts? This is my first HIM. Should I trust my plan? So I take an additional week of taper? Is this second guessing normal?

Anyone know for this event if the bike racks are marked/numbered like the full IM's, or is it just a free-for-all setup based on arrival time?

You will have an assigned space and rack.

If you are following a plan, you should probably try to stick with it.  To me, the whole taper concept is a fine line.  Let down too early, and I think you risk losing some of your conditioning.  I am probably guilty of not tapering early enough.  I will probably dial things back a bit two weeks out, then quite a bit the week leading up.  But I am by no means an expert.  This will only be my second crack at a HIM, my first being this race last season when I had some injury/health issues which complicated training.  And I should point out that I haven't followed any particular plan yet, just a self-guided training approach.  Maybe some other plan people will chime in.

Good luck !!!  You'll do fine.

If your anything like me, you will be second guessing everything as you get closer to the event .
This is only my second HIM also , and I figure, if I have trusted my plan up to now I should continue to do so .

How did everyone's weekend go? 4 more weeks to go!!!

We had some beautiful weather out here in SoCal and had a great 80 mile ride from Anaheim to Solana Beach Saturday. We had a group of 10 all training for CA70.3 or Superfrog. I probably pushed a little too hard in the beginning because I was definitely spent by the end. Gave myself yesterday off but now it's going to be 3 huge weeks before a 1 week taper before Oceanside.

Just finished OWS in Seal Beach (60 miles N of Oceanside) and water temp is rising. No brain freeze and I could feel my feet after only a couple of minutes. Water should feel great on race day.
Question: two years ago they took out the sand portion of the run, but the competitor packet shows running on "sand road," are we back to the soft sand run this year?

I think it depends on the tides.  The race officials would really like to do the sand run so the people in the community right there can get out of their parking lots but the tide has been too high the past few years and the sand was underwater at that section.

I'm certainly hoping for high tide again!

I figured that was the case, race morning high tide is at 5:41 am at about 5.1 (I think), so maybe we will get lucky. The trade off is the extra hill to run up, but I'm not sure which is worse, soft sand or asphalt hill.

You can keep an eye on water temperatures here:

http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/spac_tmap.html

The station in Oceanside isn't working, but the one just south of that in La Jolla says 58 degrees. It was 60 just a couple of days ago. Anyway it's not bad. I did the race in 2007 and that year the temp was closer to 50 degrees!

Hi! I just wanted to ask what strategy you guys normally follow on the bike for oceanside for those who have done it before? I noticed there are 3 climbs on the profile. How steep are these climbs? Thank you. Much appreciated.
