Just entering the thread.  This will be my first Ironman and I'm looking forward to the challenge.  Any training advice?

that depends.  If your 30-34 then you can probably just do 1 mile repeats on the bike, run no more than 5 miles per week, and just sit in a hot tub for the swimming (it's time in the water you need).

If you are older you might wanna look at some of the plans here and see which one works for your own time constraints.  It's a long ways to go, I would think putting another race on the sked will help keep you pumped.

BUT... if you age 35-39, you can eat all you want every day Beer, Pizza, Ice Cream whatever. You need to fuel all that training sax suggests.

Even age 40-45, you can, and have to eat everything you can. My wife was getting very scared that I was getting too skinny, and I was eating everything in sight.

While watching Kona on TV the other day, and seeing all the half-dead people cross the line my son says "I worry about you doing an Ironman, mom.  You can easily die during that race!" To which I replied "You can easily die crossing the street."  He raised his eyebrows and relented "True."

Crap.  I have to cross the street today.  Wish me luck.

In other news, my long-put-off-so-I-could-deploy hernia surgery is looking like it's going to happen in January.  Doc says no training whatsoever for six weeks, but I'm a quick healer and an impatient patient.   Good thing I have a PT in the house to keep me somewhat honest...

None of that now

Your gonna finish strong Tanya and it's gonna be cool when you round that final corner and see the big green G'Ade Bottle and know you are there as your son runs out of the pen and paces you into the finish.

I'll be using them!  They did a great job getting my bike to KY this year.

Just woke from my first Ironman dream!! It wasn't about the race but about missing the packet pickup and I was wandering around some hotel the night before the race trying to find someone who would give me my packet so I could still do the race and not lose out on my $500 bucks!!

Anyway, I should probably intro myself. I'll be doing my first Ironman distance next November in Tempe. I recently moved from Surprise, AZ to Corona, CA. Looking forward to training like a crazy man for the next 11 months to be prepared for this race. Talk to you later ~ Brian

I wish all IMAZ participants for 2009 and future races a great year!  If some of you have started out training already in the winter months, I suggest considering that the run is not as flat as it may look like on a map.  Good base training should include at least some hill repeats - this isn't Florida after all!

Great advice

While in town volunteering this year, I had a chance to do quite a bit of running on the course and agree that there are a couple of places that have the ability to put the hurt on if your not prepared for it. (The Run over the Butte on Curry Road in particular)

This is a 3 lap course and the good news is that we get to see everything there is to see about the course pretty early in the marathon. The bad news is that we have 2 more repeats for the parts we don't particularly care for.

Just visualize the point where the Loopers continue down the waterfront and the Finishers turn onto Rio Salado toward the big Gatorade Bottle, the Wall of Noise and the Bright lights of the finish

Seasons Greetings IMArizona Friends!

Well I encouraged my wife to do her first Ironman at this year's IM Arizona. We put her bike on the TriBike Transport at Gear West Bike Shop in Long Lake, Minnesota. We live in Rochester, MN. She chose IMAZ because it was in the area where her parents spent the Winter from farming and we could all be there to cheer and support her. So, we flew down to Phoenix, got our rental car, checked in to our hotel, and went to the venue to check things out and let my wife get a warm up and check in. I was amazed at how great the NAS people do at setting up and running the event. I know what it takes since I am a USA Triathlon Cert. Race Director and Official myself. Our boys, 17,17, and 5 came along with us. My wife's Grandma and Mom came along to watch and cheer all of the athletes. It was an inspiration to watch not only my wife, but all of the athletes. What a spectacle! Watching the athletes giving it their all was awesome! I was inspired to see my wife become the Ironman that I knew she could be. All those long hours of training. All of those long hours our entire family put in to support her. We all participated in the Ironman success of our loved ones. The next day I thought about signing up to become an Ironman myself. Self-doubt is tough. I was inspired by the thousands of people who crossed that line to Mike Reilly spout those famous words, "Joe Snuffy You Are An IRONMAN!!" Well, I did it. I registered for the Ironman Arizona 2009. My feet are to the fire now. The ultimate challenge is set for me. I like many of you will need encouragement and support from my extended network of friends and family. As far as I am concerned we all share a common bond in this challenge. Let us all work together to achieve our dreams of becoming an Ironman on Nov 22nd, 2009!

Have fun training, I know I will!

Happy New Year!

Bill

I had another ironman "Dream" last night. Very unsettling. Apparently I forgot my special needs bags which held my nutrition and I didn't make the bike cutoff (which is my biggest fear).

I'm not sure I can deal with this for a year.

When does everyone's training program officially kick off?

I think a lot of us are also doing the California 70.3, so we're just starting our training for that.

After California 70.3 it will mostly be a bunch of "B" and "C" races and consistent but medium intensity training so that I don't get burnt out. The official training for IMAZ really won't start till 20 weeks out- early to mid June.

There's two distances that I've already conquered: the 2.4 miles (cake) and the marathon which is no big deal to me. My big Dragon is the bike, 2008 is the first year for me to get on a bike since I was a kid, and I never went past a 30 mile ride. Advice, anyone? My best average is 19mph for 25 miles on a flat pancake course. I feel I need a lot of work on this issue and I could use you guys expertise here.

I still have 11 months to IMAZ, I think that's the good news though...

Please reply

My training starts after I am fully recovered from the Boston Marathon. (My other "A" Race) I would have liked to have done IMCal again but it is during Taper Time for Boston.

I will probably be following a 20 week plan and just base building until then. I have a few tuneup races in mind though. (A couple of 5k swims, a few Olympics and a Half Marathon or two)

my advice is to get a coach to help coordinate your bike improvement while you try to retain your fitness in the other two.

I know a popular spot is the Hampton Inn on Scottsdale Road in Tempe. It's just a few miles to transition.
