xmann1102 - 2009-05-18 3:47 PM i'm planning on a Friday swim in Aquatic Park if anyone wants to join me.   be nice for a few of us to get a swim in.

Sounds good to me.  Do we want to set a time?  Probably afternoon to get the largest group?

Does anyone also want to plan on a Saturday BT dinner?  I'm thinking early...like 5-5:30ish.

Sounds like Friday evening is a good bet! 5:30 so that people that work can get to the park! A few of us also have a Saturday morning swim at 7:00 which will be quite reflective of the following morning. Please email ast [email protected] or call 925-922-0897 if you have any questions. Aquatic Park is at the end of Van Ness and parking is somewhat challenging so plan on getting there a few minutes early. Have a good one!

Just when I finally unfreaked myself out over ocean life in SF Bay, I find out they have these things in there:

NOT a happy camper.

To try to help unfreak you out, there was this:

"The sevengill shark is aggressive when provoked and is considered potentially dangerous to humans. According to the International Shark Attack File, the sevengill shark has been responsible for five documented unprovoked attacks on humans since the 16th century."

5 attacks in the last 5 centuries.  If we're averaging 1 attack (not death) every 100 years, I think you're pretty safe.  You're much more likely to be attacked by a crazy person on stilts dressed as a clown, than one of these sharks.

From the same site:
"The majority of the time, the sevengill shark swims slowly along the bottom substrate while occasionally cruising to the surface."

Given how many swimmers, kayaks, jet skis, etc are going to be out there, I think most creatures will stay way away.  Having done Alcatraz last year, I did not see any sharks or other creatures during the swim.  (Nevermind that the water visibility meant I could hardly see my own hands).

If you don't want to freak out, then ignore that Great Whites also live in the area.

And to make you feel even better, you should hope the great whites are in the area, since they eat the sevengills.  That way you won't have to afraid.

Being a local Bay Area fisherman, seven gills are extremely hard to catch even when targeting them (chum and large cut baits) Unless you have a huge open wound I wouldn't worry! I'd worry more about the local boats that frequent Alcatraz and fishermen's wharf!

Have a good one!

When is everyone getting into SF? I'm flying in on Thursday. Staying at the Edwards Inn. Renting a bike (which I'm kind of nervous about not having my bike) and swimming with Water World on Friday morning. Hubby flies in on Friday afternoon.

What do you think would be the cheapest and easiest way to get to the hotel from the SF airport? I'm just bringing a tri bag and bike.

I'd love to meet up with the other Edwards BT gang. I can't believe it is almost here! I'm going to trust my training and not freak out about the race.

I'm flying in Friday morning with my wife and daughter. Staying at the Edwards.

The cheapest way from the airport is the BART into the civic center then bus or taxi to the hotel.

I would like to swim a bit on Friday and possibly Saturday. I also would like to ride the course a bit.

We are arriving early thursday afternoon with the family. I want to swim on Friday morning to get the ffel of the bay in the AM (most likely swom at aquatic park). We are staying at the Marriott at Fisherman's Warf.

On the vacation side, we are doing Alcatraz on Friday night and possibly a dinner at the Spinnaker on Sunday evening. Other than that, we will be doing the tourist thing as much as possible.

I would love to meet up with some BTers and swim/run if possible.

I have my weekend all planed out and will be doing a lot of tourist things too.  Like the night tour of Alcatraz and Napa Valley...

I'll be getting there early afternoon on Thursday.  I'm staying at Edwards II as well.

Let's do the 5:30 swim on Friday and I'll probably go swim again on Saturday, just so I'm prepared for the cold.

I'm also going to try to bike the route on Friday, just to get a feel for the streets if anyone wants to join me for that.

Let's definitely do a drink at a local pub Thursday when people start getting in.  I'll probably be around in race shirts, so say Hi.

The Edwards is on Lombard and is west of the Marriott. It is walking distance to Chrissy Field and the Marina.

I double checked...  The Edwards has Bloomer's Pub.  It looks like a small place, but it has drinks!!!

BT can own it maybe Thursday night around 5:30?  I will have a spot in there, that's for sure!

xmann-I rented a bike from Blazing Saddles. Where did you rent yours from? I'm going to pick mine up on Friday afternoon.

I'm interested in checking out the bike course but in a car/taxi. If anyone is interested in sharing let me know.

Pub sounds great! Count me in.
