Subject: Training swimsuit help
So thanks to this wonderful sport, I have lost some weight and it's time to replace my swimsuits! I've always used Tyr and Speedo...they have worked out pretty well. However, as a college student (who is spending much of my extra money on Tri's this year!), I'm trying to save as much money as I can. Does anybody recommend any other brands other than these? Or am I better off to spend the extra money due to better quality? Any suggestions on where to get the best deals?

On that note, do the poly suits generally last longer?

welcome becky! my favorite suit is the speedo flyback in the poly endurance material. it lasts alot longer than the lycra ones I have gone through. I got a good deal on one through lane4swim. I think it was only 39.50 and it was just a nice black/grey, not crazy bright closeout colors they sometimes have. Sorry I can't recommend any other companies, Speedos seem to be the only ones that fit me.

Yes, poly lasts longer. Yes, it's about always worth the money.

I agree with Kim.... I bought 4 of the Endurance fabric Speedo's and am still on my first one with no signs of it wearing out.  My husband is retired military so I have access to AAFES (the PX) and found them on sale for...... you won't believe this, but.... about $13.oo each!!!!  I have kind of a royal blue camouflage and a gray/black camouflage.  I found that the lycra ones wear out quite quickly and once you see signs of it wearing out, it isn't long before you wonder what you are flashing for everyone to see at the pool!  Embarassed

I posted in the other thread, but again, 100% POLYESTER, absolutely. Night and day.

Wore out my old lycra blend suit in 8 weeks.

My poly suit is 4 months going strong, looking and feeling brand new.

I have performed minimal to NO care for it despite swimming 4-5x/wk. Meaning that the only "rinsing" of chlorine it gets frome me is that I wear it into the postpool shower for a quick full-body rinse, no longer than 1 minute. (I do my real shower at home.) Goes onto my drying rack overnight, and then is used again the next day. I do throw it in the laundry about every week.

 OMG where did  you find that deal???  I just checked AAFES and there were no speedos!  You lucky dog you!

 

I did check the speedo site- they have some of LY's endurance suits (poly) on sale.

I've only ever worn Speedo or TYR (and I have one Nike suit) - most of the brands tend to be expensive in general. Polyester lasts longer (though I'm not a huge fan). But there are sites like swimoutlet.com that have nice discounts. And if you don't mind ugly patterns and such for workouts, the "grab bag" specials can be a good deal. Also, I've seen TYR polyester suits on SierraTradingPost.com - I got 2 reversable ones last Christmas - $25 each (and since they're reversable, that's basically 4 suits for $50). On rare occasion, you can find actual swimsuits at TJMaxx or Marshalls, mixed in with the bikinis and other beach suits. That's where I found the Nike one that I like.

You can usually find good swimsuit deals at swim outlet .  If you don't care about the color, the grab bag suits are the way to go.

Super cute all poly suits at http://www.swimoutlet.com I swim 3 days a week and 2 suits alsted me a whole year.  I like the dolphin uglies brand.  They run about $25 a piece

I like speedo, but I only get them at Costco. If you have one near you, they only cost $20! My current swimsuit is in desperate need of being replaced and I keep checking with Costco, but they don't have their swimwear out yet. That's my suggestion!

$40 for a poly suit that last over a year (and still going) compaired to $30 for a lycra suit that I have to replace every 3 months.

Besides.  I just look every once in a while at Sports Authority.  The will have them on sale for 25 to 30 bucks and just get one then.

Another SwimOutlet fan here.....

I will ONLY buy 100% Poly suits.  I've been on a swim team for 4 years, and for a few weeks, the pool I was at had seriously over-chlorination problems.  The the point where the hair on my arms got dissolved and my velcro watch band disintegrated.  My poly suit was unaffected.

My personal use record for a poly suit is 1.5 years.  Its actually still fine, I just got tired of the design and I've lost weight so it was starting to get a bit loose.

I prefer the Speedo Poly suits over TYR.  There is/was piping on the TYR suits that would fade/stretch over time. 

The Speedo Flip-Turns suits are fun and cheap(er), but IMO, they aren't as good as the traditional Speedo Endurance suits.  The straps in the back of the Flip-Turns suits stretch out quickly - mostly because they're not attached to a middle patch of fabric for stability. 

If you hunt, you can find Endurance suits for $45.  SwimOutlet is a good resourse, as is your local swim shop that's clearing out old suits.
