It took me about 6 pairs of goggles to finally find one that works for me - the speedo vanquisher.  I'm fine as long as I don't do flip turns, because when I do a flip turn, they leak!!!   Anyone else have this problem?  Any ideas, other than cranking them down tighter (which I'm not sure I could stand) or avoiding flip turns?

You prob do not realize it but I bet you are making faces when you do a flip turn.

I have the vanquishers as well and if I giggle while I swim they leak as well.

I use to squint when I did my flip turns and it was a killer for water getting in there. Just go a little slower into the wall and make sure to keep air coming out of your nose. It will come!

My mind wanders a lot when i swim and sometimes the pool can be one funny place!  I sure try not to because water in goggles is not funny.

Could your goggles be too tight? I found that mine were leaking and made a comment about tightening them one night at masters swim and someone told me that when they are too tight they don't hold the suction as well.

Don't make faces (and/or giggle while you swim). This is serious stuff (just kidding!)

Try tightening the nose piece one notch.  Often when goggles leak, it's because they're trying to seal along the temple rather than the outer edge of the eye socket.

Alright, I'll bite; why would you be giggling while you are swimming?

Edit: oops, I see someone beat me to the question.

Might be the model of goggle you use. I will be of no help because I bought a 3-pack of three different Speedo goggles from Costco, very cheap, but the package doesn't say what the name of the goggles are. The one style I use all the time. They might be called Hydroflex, if I recall from buying the individual pair. They are comfortable, and sometimes water get in on a flip turn. I just have to check my head position on the turn and occasionally give the straps a tightening click. Another pair from the pack I used only once. They did not leak at all, but they hurt, and there doesn't seem to be much strap left to loosen them.

The pair that hurt have individual eye cups with the adjustable piece at the nose. The pair I usually use are one molded piece without the nose adjustment.

I don't know about giggling, but there has been occasional horseplay at the pool between me and someone else, where someone is grabbing someone else's legs. It's fun to grab someone's legs or have your legs grabbed. breaks up the monotony.

Interesting.   I'll play with them some more.  Thanks!  They might be a bit tight... I can swim 2500 without a leak, but when I'm done my eyes sure show that I've had goggles on.  And they hurt just a little bit.  Maybe they are a tad too tight.

Ouch!  If that's the case, then they're too tight.  If they need to be that tight to keep from leaking, then they don't fit you right.  Try loosening the strap.  If they leak then, try adjusting the nose piece.  If they still leak, then go goggle shopping.

I agree, sounds like they are too tight....I used the Speedo Vanquishers and had to switch as I was having problems as well...they just didn't fit my face well. I have since swapped to Aqua Sphere Kaimens and love them, no issues whatsoever.

I use the Vanquishers too.  They are one of the few googgles that seem to fit my face.  They come with different nose pieces.  These can make a big difference.  Hopefully you can find the right nose piece and loosen them up a touch.

Make sure your head is in a tight streamline and tucked when doing flip turns on the push off.

OK, I'll go contrarian here...

First, other than workout inconvenience, does it matter?  **MOST** tris don't require flip turns, so in a race or OWS, not an issue.

Second, in practice, I do the exact same thing...vanquishers or kaimans...with the same result...if I come off the wall hard with my head down (e.g., chin on chest), one edge will invariably leak. If I come off with a moderate push or with my head slightly up, no issues whatsoever.

And I'd warn against cranking the goggles down further as a remedy. That's like taking an ill-fitting corset and making it tighter. Not gonna work, and will bruise you. Comfortable, light fit should stick tight.

You are right that we aren't doing flip turns during a tri, but I would think they would help build lung capacity/endureance by not stopping (even briefly)

OK... dare I take this thread on a tangent?  Do flip turns really gain me that much time?  If I'm racing in a snake swim in a pool, I don't like to flip turn because I like to use that moment to check out what's going on around me.  Am I going to run into someone?  Is someone right on my tail?  How big of a deal is it?

I am not going to comment on the flip turns in training in general other than to say I do them and it improves my swimming in all aspects.  That issues has beenhashed out repeatedly on every tri board, just search for flip turns.

However, if your tri is in a pool, yes, you should be doing flip turns in that race rather than seeing who's where (a certain Frenchman lost a gold medal by doing that recently ).  I can guarantee that it's a faster way to swim in a pool

As for the goggles, unless I have a bad pair, mine do not leak on flip turns.

ETA - sometimes it's good to swim with leaky goggles.  never know what is going to happen in a race, including leaky goggles.  Getting used to the feeling is probably beneficial

I agree with everything Chris said but I will go a little further with one statement.  If your tri is in a pool, you should be doing *good* flip turns as it is definitely a faster way to swim in a pool.  My personal experience tells me that a *good* flip turn is worth at least a body length vs an open turn.  So if I can gain 6 feet at every turn in a 25m pool, over a 750m sprint swim, that's more than a 50m difference by the end of it.  Now, all that being said, I swim with some people who do *bad* flip turns at every wall and I am pretty sure I could do an open turn faster than what they are doing.

Back to the topic of leaking goggles, mine rarely leak and if they do, it's no more than a tiny amount in the bottom.  As Chris said, it's probably good to get used to that feeling, if you get used to it then it's no big deal.   Someone else suggested that too tight might also be the problem and I would agree with that as well.  Mine aren't tight on my head at all, they just fit my face nicely.
