Pre-race routine:

Got up just before 6, drank coffee, ate a Luna bar and yogurt, then left for the finish area of the race. Ate a banana on the way. Took a shuttle to the start. Stomach was feeling a little churned up. Stood in a ridiculously long line for the portapotty. Gun went off for the start of the race just before I got to the front of the line. Did what I needed to do, ate a gel and drank some water, then hustled toward the start to find my corral.
Event warmup:

Powerwalking/jogging about a half mile to the start. Found my corral just as it was crossing the starting line!

  • Never could get my heart rate under control, and never found a comfortable pace. It just never came together for me - not my day, I guess! Truly didn't enjoy much of this race at all - stubborn determination kept me moving forward. My legs were beat by mile 5, at which point I knew a PR was not in the cards. Had some significant forefoot soreness for the rest of the race after about that same point. Stomach had been weird before the race but never did bother me while running, at least. The air temperature was a lot warmer than my body was used to running in and the sun was blazing over just about the entire course. Drank 1-2 cups of water at every water stop. Ate 3 Luna Moons each at miles 5 and 8 and took a Hammer gel at mile 10. Picked up the pace a little in the last couple miles just because I wanted it to be over that much sooner!
    What would you do differently?:

I don't know. Just wasn't my day and that was okay. It was still a nice race and an awesome weekend, so I have no regrets. I'll go sub-2 at some point, I have no doubt about that - this race just wasn't the one for it.

One thing I DO know I would do differently is run in a newer pair of shoes - these were at the end of their life and I think that was the cause of the leg and foot fatigue and pain. Oh, and I also wouldn't eat a meatball sandwich for lunch the day before. It tasted AWESOME but goofed up my stomach (lots of gas pain and pressure) for most of the rest of Saturday.
    Post race
    Warm down:

Walked through the finish area to the family reunion area. Parked myself on the grass and ate some food and drank water til I saw Travis approaching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm sure the relative heat and old shoes didn't help.

    Event comments:

Good race overall, though I had expected more bands. The music just didn't keep me going like I had thought it would.

2:07 isn't bad!  And it's a good excuse to visit Phoenix this time of year.

Tired legs and a stomach that ws so-so...I'd take the 2:07.  Great job hanging in there to finish at a steady pace.

You gutted it out and still ran a damn good race. I was shot by mile 6 as well. And you put it perfectly, "...never found a comfortable pace." I never did either.

What a great weekend though. And you are so going sub 2 d00d. It's only a matter of time.

Looks like you had a great race despite not feeling 100%. I think a lot of people felt the heat affected them. Hope you had a good time here!
