Subject: Anyone here do open water swim races?
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone here does long distance open water swim events. I've signed up for 3 of them this year, all 1 milers and I'm eyeing a 3 mile race in May. I started doing open water swimming before I got involved in triathlon and love it. I'm hoping to be able to balance my swim training with my tri training.

Anyone here swim or do other events besides tris during the season? Any advice on how to balance the workouts so you don't loose fitness in between tris and other races?

As of now my schedule looks like this: March 14th: sprint tri, April 5th: sprint tri, April 25th: 1mi. open water swim, May 23rd: 1mi. open water swim, May 31st: sprint tri, June 23rd: 1mi. open water swim, July 14th: sprint tri.

My June swim is the last one of the year and after the July sprint I'm going to focus on getting ready for my first Oly in Oct. If I did do the 3mi. race it would be in mid May in place of the 1mi. I hope I'm figuring correctly that the long distance swimming will not take away too much from my tri training (like say if I was doing longer distance run races). I hope I'm right.

I did two 1-mile swims last year.  It was kind of like a 5K -- short, no pressure, tshirt

I'm relaying a 25k open water with 4 guys a month after my first half iron and 2 weeks after a sprint.  I think you should be ok.  Just don't give it your 100% all if it's really close to one of your A races...

Last year I did two, 1 mile swim races. I did and Ironman relay as the swimmer. I did 2 olympic tris and a 3 sprints.

You might consider joining a relay team for an IM or HIM distance swim. Its alot of fun!

I do 2-3 a season, culminating in a 2 miler in August.   I don't lose any tri training for it, as I just increase my swimming a bit and do 2 x masters during the week and then a long (1 to 2 miler) OWS on sundays

I've really been wanting to do one of these.

Where does one find events for local races?

As of March 1st I am going to start swimming a lot more cuz I want to train to cross from Cancun to Isla Mujeres (Mexico). They do this ever month; you get your own support boat/team and off you go swimming. Generally I heard the best time to do so is during the summer due to the sea currents. the distance is a bit over a 10K so it will be fun and I have this fear for swimming in the ocean hence it will test me quite good. Don't know when exactly I'll do it but some time in July might work, maybe for my b-day.

For training I am shooting to swim 6x week, swimming 4-5x 3-5K and one of those do it a long 10-15K session. Otherwise the training will remain balanced with biking and running.

I'm doing the 5280 swim in Raleigh on April 18th.  I have never done an ows before so I am using this 'race' as a slow intro so that I can get used to a wetsuit and open water swimming.  I am participating in my first ows the next day so it will be nice to have the practice first.  Also, I just recently taught myself how to swim so I figured that this would be a good goal to go for.

I'm doing a 2-mile OWS race in May in Reston, VA, as part of training for IMLP.  I'm not out there to "race" it, though.  More of a mental confidence-building thing.
