Hi my name is Anna and I love to swim and want to get in shape. I feel setting a goal to do a Tri by the summer or fall would be great. Although time is always an excuse and two children ages 4 and 3 are not that easy to juggle either. But i want to do this for myself and I believe I can!
Any advice for a new comer??
Thanks Anna

Hi Anna,

Working toward a triathlon is a great goal.  People of all shapes and sizes are finding the tri more than equal to the sum of its parts.   Look for what you need here.  Advice, support, info, and humor.   This is a good place to start (and I notice you start pretty early.)

Welcome.

Welcome Anna. Congrats on making the decision to do this. I know how tough it is with the little kids. I see lots of moms carrying theirs to the health club each morning, thankful that the club has child care facilities. Enlist some support if you have it, find someone else locally and see if she'll join you in daily training. It's always good to have a partner to help with the motivation. Check the local events calendar for you here: http://www.trifind.com/ct.html and pick a nice short event that you can use as a goal. I'm in Massachusetts...hope to see you at an event sometime. Keep checking in here and let us know how the training is going.

Hi Anna and welcome aboard. I would say that two kids is not an excuse, that is a lifestyle which you must work your training schedule around. Set yourself a definite, and realistic, goal. Sign up for a sprint tri which is scheduled for whatever date you think you will be ready; this will keep you focused on your goal. Adopt the training schedule which suits your goal; take a look at the home page at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/ and remember that you can change the days to suit your own scheule. Review all the equipment you have on hand; at this point you don't need an expensive bike but good pair of running shoes is a must as is a good pair of swim goggles. And most of all, ask lots of questions on this board. Good luck....

Nice to meet you Anna.  I know with kids it's hard to juggle, especially at the beginning.  After a few weeks of doing consistent workouts, it'll more likely become PART of your daily routine rather than something to work INTO your routine.  Good luck!

Humor will help greatly! Every morning starts by 5:30 am. That's when I get in a moring row. Then soon after the kids are awake.
Thanks

Welcome Anna! It is hard to juggle the training and kids (I have two also), but I always try to not get too worried if I have to miss a bit. I just make it up the next day if I can. I know for me, once it gets warmer and I can train outside more, it'll be better since I don't have to make a special trip to the gym every time.

Welcome Anna,

You have taken the first step, keep it up. I can sympathize with you on the kids and training point. It's not the easiest, I find that getting up before work tends to be the best, and it gets you charged for the day. I want to be able to spend time with my son when I get home from work before he goes to bed, and I have found that if I work out later at night I'm too pumped to go to bed. I ended up staying up late because I couldnt fall asleep. Then I would be shot then next morning.

SO, it's get up early to work out for me. It's kinda rough getting up that early sometimes but I feel great once I'm working out. Give mornings a try.

Also even though my wife supports my decision to train for the race, I still feel guilty leaving her at home when I go out to train.

Again Welcome!

The warmer weather is coming here also, making it easier for me to walk/run with the kids outside. Any suggestions on how much walking should I do before I start running??

Welcome to the site Anna. I have four kids and juggling them in with work and training is tough but doable.

Hi Anna,

Sorry for the delayed response! I see that superrad has already pointed you to the Couch to 5k program, which is what I was going to suggest for a walking program. Hope it works for you!
