I I'm Lisa and I just wanted to say hello. I plan on doing my first triathlon in August in Chicago--which is where I'm from. If anyone has any words of wisdom to get me through those running workouts please let me know.

Hi Lisa,

Running wisdom....put one foot in front of the other.  Repeat as necessary.

Lots more advice where that came from.

Welcome to the group.  Post often.

Hey Lisa, welcome to the group. I feel for you, running workouts are tougher on me than anything. You have to get creative to keep them interesting.

1. Can you run with a friend? That always helps. Do a moderate pace workout where you can still carry on bits of a conversation.
2. Take along some music to listen to.
3. Try running somewhere different to spice things up. For me it's trail running in the woods. The roads are just too darn boring.
4. Near the lake in Chicago? Can you run on a beach?

Mainly I find it's the variety more than anything that helps with motivation. Doing the same thing day after day and never changing your routine is a contributing factor to eventually giving up. Keep it fun and you'll find progress will come more quickly too!

YAAAAY..... Welcome Chicago Triathlete!
I am also doing the Chicago Tri (Olympic). Pray for no ECOli in Lake Michigan!!

As far as the running, just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Are you still living in Chicago? If so, email me and we can chat.
I have been running in Chicago year round for the past 3 1/2 years.

There is no such thing as Spring in Chicago. There are only two seasons here, summer and winter.

Hi lisa,
if your aiming to improve, increase your training workload each weak until you peak for your race. this might be a relatively short run, then increase either the distance or intensity each week, and the same with the swim and bike. you will improve quite quickly this way

best of luck,
.:aidan:.

Welcome Lisa! this is a great place to hang out! my words of wisdom would have to be dont be afraid to walk. i could not run a full block when i started, but just little chunks at a time. but now, i am running non stop and the distance is improving every work out. you WILL get there! Jack

Lisa,Welcome Aboard! Chicago, my home town! I would love to be able to run along Lake Michigan. (Not now of course!!!) I can't believe I just wrote that sentence. Literally five weeks ago I couldn't run 30 sec w/o stopping. I absolutely HATED running!!!! But now I'm running 11 min w/o stopping and even did my first run race. (Had a pitfully awful time but I crossed the finish line)! So the running will come. How do you eat an elephant? One spoonful at a time. And running is like that. I started by running 1 min more a week. My first week run 1 min., 2nd week run 2 min and so on. It's been fun. Good luck and happy training days!
