Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George Utah 2010 Ha! St. George is my backyard... I do half my races up there. Swim is nice at that time of year. The water is cool, but not cold. There is one giant downhill that you can easily get 45-50 mph on (I have, and if it's the one I'm thinking about). There is a cattle guard at the bottom though, so it get a little spooky. Someone crashed BIG TIME on it, once. The roads could be better, a little rough. I'm glad I have my carbon bike now. The run should be good. That time of the year, the weather is generally pretty good. But I have raced around then and had some nasty wind and chilly temps with rain... Can't wait. ETA: I will check the course, and share anything else I might know. PLUS, I might get a chance to ride the course ahead of time once or twice! Advantage, me! Edited by Aikidoman 2009-03-18 5:35 PM |

That would be nice. it's rough. they cover the CG with big rubber mats. I think it's safe, but hitting anything at 45mph is unnerving... I wonder if they can take it out for the race, and put temp. paving down, and then put it back... |

Mesa | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George Utah 2010 gcirongirl - 2009-03-18 2:13 PM I am in! Yeah! I can't hardly pass this one up. I live in Salt Lake. As far as conditions go, it could be absolutely perfect. More likely, however, we will need to be really prepared for some serious wind. The weather can be pretty unpredictable that time of year. I don't care! This one is in my backyard and on a Saturday!!!!!!!! If you didn't notice... I signed up. That means bad foul weather! |

It actually works out great for me. Fall races have me doing long rides in 115 degree weather. Now I can ride/run in the cooler temps. |

Excellant. We've got an insider! Couple of questions: 1. Do you think the swim is doable w/o a wetsuit? 2. Got any idea of the elevation gain on the bike course? Is there an elevation profile posted somewhere that I missed? 3. What sorts of things are there to do in Vegas for a 16 and 19 yo? 4. What is there to do (tourist-wise) in St George? 5. Hotel reccomendations?

Extreme Veteran 315 South Jordan UT | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George Utah 2010 I have a friend who has ridden that area and has posted a map in the forums at www.desert-sharks.com He isn't completely sure of the entire course so it may be off a bit. But this guy is usally as accurate as they come so he will probably correct it as the course becomes more readily available. Water temperature will likely be a little chilly yet for doing without a wetsuit, but may be doable. The weather can be a little unpredictable that time of year, but is usually good. There is another tri that uses the same venue that got stormed out last year, so be prepared. Wind can be an issue. It will be a gorgeous ride though. I LOVE St George! There is so much to do. Very family friendly. Lots of museums, parks, canyons, etc. If you don't like the "dry" atmosphere, Mesquite is just a hop away. There are plenty of hotels. I am already working on finding mine though. I will be bringing my 5 kids and so finding a space for all of us can be a challenge. This town is used to hosting the St George marathon every year and does a fabulous job of it. |

We went through that B.S. with IMAZ when it was in April. So says the guy who presumably lives in the south... Who lives 5 miles from the IMAZ start line that now would have to train in 110 heat for his local race. But does anyway from Silverman Full which is a better November race anyway. Just don't want to hear the whining. |

~Mike Pretty much the bike course - http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ut/hurricane/145123740280865467 Here's the elevation map, approximately. Saying about 5200 feet of gain, 5400 of loss. A friend I know has ridden the hill that is repeated and says that downhill is SCARY fast. But at least its all downhill into T2 eh? Edited by sportyj 2009-03-21 1:28 PM |

~Mike Water is cold (it IS may) but not freezing. I race there at that time of year, and it's managable for sure. I could do it without a wetsuit, but the water start would be tough (just standing in chest high water)... People have provided the profile... I heard 5200 feet. Not much just for kids. You would have to be with them. But there is the amusement park at Circus circus, the pools, arcades, shows (you have to go to)... The water park at mandalay is awesome. Not that much in St. George, but Mt. Zion Natl. Park is close, and it really pretty. St. George is more of a place to relax (at least what I have done). Plenty of good places to eat. They also have an outdoor theater and put on plays. Called the Tuacahn theater. The wife and I make races a weekend event. Go out to eat, see a show, race.... They have a really good frozen custard place too! Hotels in St. George or Vegas? In St. G. We generally stay at a Best Western on the north end of town. Closer to the race course and reasonable rates. |
