Just thought I would join the discussion.   I just reg. for the Ironman Utah last night and I am so pumped that I finally get a chance to race an actual Ironman.  I have been trying for a couple of years now to a) get into an Ironman and b) find one that I could work in around my work schedule.

I have a training questions:

I am weakest at the run and seeing how everything I have read about this race says the run will be tough I want to considerate on improving my run leg.  The question is: I have the opportunity to run a marathon in mid February and was wondering if this would be a good ideal?

My plan is to train for a local 70.3 in October and then starts a 24 week Ironman plan I have, but change the LSD Runs on the weekend only to get me ready for the Marathon….once the marathon is over jump back into the plan.  Thoughts?

Depends...  are you worried you can't complete a marathon and want to finish one before St George? That may provide some benefit, but honestly, in my limited experience, "running a marathon" won't make you stronger.  Mike Ricci has advised here for people in similar situations to train for the marathon, but run a half marathon as a race.   Same training benefit, very little recovery.

You're looking at a good week or two (depending on you) of recovery after running the full marathon, about 8 -10 weeks out, right in the middle of your training cycle.

Haven't done a hilly IM, but I've done a few hilly HIMs, and if it were me I would do the majority of my long runs in the hills.  You are going to need strength as well as endurance

Thanks for the advice.  I have done a marathon, so metally I know I can do it.  Everything I am reading and my plan calls for a 3hr LSD at the most.  So I may just stick to the plan.  You have a good point about the recovery.  After the last marathon I did I lost about a week and a half of training do to soreness.

I guess the good thing is I live in the Texas Hill Country so most of my long rides and runs are on rolling hills.

Personally, I would not do a marathon that close to IM. For me, it would take too long to recover. Add in a short taper before the marathon and you could lose 2-3 weeks of IM training. I would pass on the marathon and get on the bike for more long rides. If you want to be able to run strong in IM you need to come off the bike fresh. It doesn't matter how good of a runner you are if your legs are toast coming off the bike.

Where did you get that room? I have checked the Marriotts as I wanted to use my rewards points but they are all booked too. I could stay in Cedar, but I really want to stay in St. George or Washington...

I got a room at the Ambassador Inn.  It was about $115/night, 2 blocks from the expo, and 2.5 miles from the finish.

I went to the following website to find a room:

I am staying at America's Best Inn and Suites - $95/night.  I reserved just a couple days ago.

FYI for anyone wanting to use rewards for frequent stay plans, you may not want to mention that you're there for the IM.  I had called several hotels just asking about rates and I was told more than once that IM/WTC had set the rates for that week and I needed to reserve my room through the St george IM website.

See you there!

I went through the IM site and the gal who booked my room was fantastic. I typically like to do things outside of the system, but this was a great experience. She is in St. George with the CVB, so she knows the properties in the area. The prices aren't stellar, but the service sure was.

You and I are in the same boat. My weakest event is the run as well and am looking to do a mary in february (Surf City). I figure that my long runs will be 2 hour hilly runs and will probably be at 6-7 hr's wk running volume so a mary that isn't all out shouldn't require too much recovery.
I figure if a mary thats not a priority race takes too much recovery than you aren't training enough in the first place and you are screwed either way.

I am also signed up for St. George.  It will be my first IM.  Definitely nervous.  As a fairly new USAT coach, I would hesitate to have someone race a marathon that close to an IM.  I agree with the person who said to train for a full, but race a half.  The beating that your joints take on that  marathon run, may set you back in your IM training.  I would take my longest run up to 20 miles and that would be it before an IM.  That is my two cents worth...now about these HILLS....MOUNTAINS....Sheesh..you guys are scaring me!  I am about to buy a Computrainer.  Anyone use one?  They were suppose to film the St. George course on Saturday for use on the Computrainer.  I am hoping this will aid my ability to simulate those climbs.

I thought there were just a few slots left weeks ago!  I am hoping my neighbor does not sign up and try to travel with me.  He is a nice guy but I can only take so much and I am not very social on IM trips!

Ha!  That's why my friend and I decided to get connecting rooms instead of sharing!

Glad to see I'm not the only one hoping it finishes filling before someone I know registers....cuz I do not want to have to deal with her for that week! Let alone listen to her remark(whine) about how long the run(walk) will take her since she decided not to train for the run(like for a HIM coming up in July)

Pretty ironic...I was just talking with my wife yesterday about how prevalent that approach is (i.e., basically training to walk the IM run or only giving lip service to the goal of attempting to run it).

Frankly, walking the hills on this course won't be particularly fun.

I have a friend who's done 3 IMs, he had to walk most of one from injury.   he said he was more sore after that IM than the others

Looks like the race is closed to general entry.  Now I just have to survive until Nov. to start the training.  I guess I also have a few more races to finish between now and Oct.

It looks like you can still sign up. On the Ironman page it shows community fund entry only. But if you go the St. George site and click on register it looks like you can still get in.

Good Morning Ms. Catwoman, I just registered now so I could ask you a question.

I would like to register for the Utah Ironman and I tried to figure out what you were talking about when you referred to going to the St. George website - is there a way you could briefly guide me? Thank you so much, no rush though just please take your time ... Thank you, Marco
