Subject: Picked my first tri date...now the hard part...
Hi My name is Steve. I toyed with the idea of doing a tri last year but basically just didn't. This year is a different story. I lost about 18 lbs since January and decided to kick it up a notch. I sent in my money for a sprint length tri, 1/2 - 16 - 3 mid June. I am very psyched. I found a solid 12 week training/prep schedule and I couldn't even wait to be 12 weeks to start it. I did my first few workouts already and the results were encouraging, to say the least.

So, any beginner tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Hey Steve! Welcome aboard. You have already done the hard part by signing up for the triathlon; it took me twenty years to do that! Now, all you have to do is train until June rolls around. Stick to your training schedule between now and June you will be more than ready to complete the tri. If you can, do the cycling leg and the running leg where the tri is to be held to familiarize yourself with them; this will give you an idea of what times to expect and will avoid any nasty surprises on tri day.

Thanks everybody!

And Mach, I was in a runner's shop yesterday talking to some of the employee's about gear and stuff. I told them I signed up for my first tri. One of them asks what tri I am doing and he tells me, watch out for the uphill then back downhill on the bike. UPHILL!?!?!?! The thought hadn't even crossed my mind! Such a newbie...... ;-0 But I decided that I will have to do some training at the site. Great advise! Thanks.

Here's a question.... Tri shorts.. what do you think. I like the idea of not having to change at all. Are they good/bad/indifferent?

thanks

oh yeah 3 mi run yesterday and i felt better the last mile than the first. endorphins were jammin!

8 mi bike today and I think some upper body work too. Rest and yoga tomorrow!

hey steve,
welcome to the site! i stick to the good ol' speedo's for the sprint triathlon, but if it is further i would suggest you get the proper tri shorts with a shamois to save your bum on the long ride.

Welcome to the site Steve! Sounds like your well on your way. I just ordered a pair of tri shorts, but haven't received them yet to know how they are. Hopefully they will be comfortable!

I keep hearing about this whole runner's high thing that you have experienced. I'm still waiting... LOL
