running2far - 2009-04-30 9:46 AM Last year 800 or so.... Water temp is posted to the main site as well......58 degrees, warner than I would have thought.

HA!  Hope that warms up a tad between now and then.  I've swam in colder but I don't prefer it.  And it reinforces the need for the wetsuit!

just an FYI, they have a du! When I did this race a few years ago, the water was so cold that they announce ahead of time, that anyone who wanted to switch to the du, could. Im a big wuss, so I switched..and am doing the Du again this year!

If you haven't already, look into a wet suit.  You will probably need it.

Oh, and above all, have fun.

Done!  I just bought a wetsuit last weekend!!  I'm really excited to use it

I'll definitely have fun, but now I'm starting to get worried about the cold water & hilly course Surprised  But barring a disaster, I guess the worst that can happen is I'll just be real slow, haha.

I'm definitely in!  Melissa (Missy) Gonzalez, the Galena Territory, F25-29.  I'm not sure what I'll be wearing, but I'll be coming with the Chicago tri club, so I'll probably be wearing something with the ctc logo on it.

It looks like it'll be a fun weekend!  I can't wait Laughing

Pfft... I survived Spirit of Racine last year.  I can survive a little swim in Galena.

Actually, if I get a change to get acclimated for a little bit, the cold doesn't bother me. Heck, it makes me swim a bit faster so I can get out of the water faster.

I am definitely in. Looking forward to it.

Staying at Eagle Ridge a couple hundred yards away from the finish line. M35-39. Riding a black cervelo one. Not sure what I will be wearing on race day.

Crowny...I did both last year. Racine (HIM) was colder, hands down. Though there's something about Galena because it's usually the first OWS of the season that makes it worse on the "OHMYGODITSSOCOLDITSTAKINGMYBREATHAWAY" scale.

Do you recommend going with a road bike or a tri bike?

Pfft.  It's a short swim, just hammer it and you won't have time to get cold.

It's a fun race, I'll do it again sometime.  Somehow I managed to be in 2nd overall position out of the water ( 1st wave ) when I did it.  Nailing the turns around the buoys is key.  That was a pretty cool freakin' experience ( to be up at the front on the pointy end of things ).  Had a couple people go by on the bike, but held my own pretty good.  Sadly, it was a planned DNF since I had an achilles problem so my race ended at T2.

Stayed the night before at one of the B&B's in the area.  It was perfect, and a great little weekend escape.

Oh I'll definitely be hammering it.  Shooting for 10 minutes, if I can.

That's what the wife and I are doing.  Although we are actually staying at Eagle Ridge till Sunday.  Making it a nice 3-day weekend get away.  I'm going to be taking advantage of a massage on Sunday myself.

Water is actually much warmer now than it was last year!

Thunderstorms!  I don't mind swimming and running in the rain, but biking on slick tires always scares me, especially going down at high speeds on some of those hills!

pjgrande - 2009-04-29 8:54 PM I posted like this for last weeks Duathlon Nats in Va, and was fun meeting some of the BTers there. (even took care of two of them in the med tent!!) sooooo....

if you are in for sure...do you mind saying where you are staying, name and age group? That way we can look each other up, find the race numbers, then each other. We went as far as saying what we would be wearing...

Pam Grande  The Ramada   F45-49  red Kestrel (not sure what I'll wear yet, with the cool temps!) Most likely before race will have on a shocking orange sweatshirt with Du Nats logo.

Scott Goehner, In Laws In Lena IL, M 25-29, blue and white Cervelo P2K with tri-spoke and disc cover, Tri Donkai race uniform.

Looking forward to the race, Hope to be out of the water under 9, so hopefully I won't be too frozen.  Weather Channel is calling for 50% of isolated storms with high of 71 and low of 44, so we will see what we get.

With the water temp as it is now, I'm not that worried about it.  Now, though, it is the rain.  I'll be driving the bike course Friday so I can get a feel for it.  I did SoR last year on wet pavement.  Actually did a fishtail through one turn.  Scared the bejeesus out of me.

Either way, I'm looking to make the most of this race.  Going to be the hilliest I've ever done.

Was thinking of rolling down some arm warmers and have them ready on the bike if it is cool that morning.  But if it is raining, it would be kind of a waste of time, don't you think?

I don't know if it would be a waste of time to have the armwarmers, even if they are wet they will probably help keep you warmer than if you didn't have then.

Good point.  And at least they are easily removable IF it gets warmer.

The swim last year was clockwise, as was stated 3 right turns and then a left into the beach, unless they have changed it.

Well, after a slightly cool ride the other night, I think I've decided I'm going to wear arm warmers on the bike.  At least I can always roll them down and take them off if I get too hot.

I'm pretty excited about this race.  I've heard so many good things about it AND how hard it is.  I'm no rookie (12 tri's under my belt) but I'm starting to get that rookie feeling.  Which I love.  Probably why I keep putting myself through this pain.

But by tomorrow night, I'll have calmed down.  I'll start my pre-race routine tonight (yep, I start two nights before by packing), and all of that will have me ready and focused come Saturday morning.  I do the same thing every time before races and it helps me get rid of any jitters.

Looking forward to meeting y'all.
