Race day quickly approaches and I am excited about competing in my first, albeit sprint, triathlon. I have read all the articles and have been training consistently for the past five months. I wonder what happens after I finish. Will I have a sudden epiphany and achieve complete inner peace? Will it be a let down like the day I graduated law school? Regardless, at least I have dropped 30 pounds in the last 5 months and look healthy and strong once more.

This will be my first SPRINT also!  I am getting nervious and trying not to chicken out!  I just want to complete the race and not too worried about my times.  I injured my rotator cuff in November and haven't been able to swim as hard and train as much as I feel was needed.  Just Hope I don't get caught in a rough group of swimmers.

Best of luck!  Remember to JUST KEEP BREATHING.

Just stay behind at the swim start.  Better to add 10 seconds to your time than injury.  I've been post RC surgery since college and though I don't have the same flexibility I used to, there are strengthening exercises.  You wanna strengthen and condition that shoulder.

Good luck!

yes stay behind a little bit and you will avoid being in a gladiator match for the position.  this way you can assure yourself to enjoy the race much more.

btw hopefully the water doesn't stink over there.  i am skipin this one since the mack cycle trilogy is comming up and i want to do all 4 of those sprints.

When does the trilogy start? Because this is my first sprint, I want to complete a race first and then compete when I get the hang of it. I think that I am strong enough (I ride with the triathletes on Biscayne every weekend and rarely get passed, swim a mile three times a week, and run three times a week, too) but I am sure someone may have a caveat or two for me. Care to share?

Im skipping this one as well...with finals ahead i could barely find time to eat....so i havent really had time to train much at all since the MIT. I wanna sign up for the trilogy as well and most likely will do all 4 races.

Good luck to those racing...i may be volunteering.

I'm planning on racing this event. But I cant decide if I should do the sprint or oly. Ive been training for about 7 months and have already done two sprints. I feel ready for the oly but I dont have a good bike or a wetsuit. Any advice??

1st trilogy sprint is 6/20/09 rest of the races for mack cycle shown in link above.

alexcall - are you strong enough?  well that is a question only you can answer.  honestly just do the first race it is pretty eye opening.  trust me egos race high before the race, they are usually brought down to the appropriate level after doing 1st race.  i will only say this there is some amazing age group athletes out there.

not to crap on your parade but passing people in key biscayne means little.  most triathletes especially during the weekend train for distance.  that means nothing to what they ride in actual race.  not everyone is ELITE but there is some really fast people in each AG.

i would say go out there have fun.  i wouldn't worry so much about your splits in the first race.

depends on your training.  if you were training for olympic race then you will be ok.  if your distances were only sprints it might be little more difficult but if you have good endurance you can at least finish.  the swim is probably the largest challenge for people.  swimming .9 mile takes about 20-25 min for a good/decent swimmer.

LOL... my parade has been crapped on!!! Doh! Seriously, though, thank you for the input and the link for the trilogy. I will remain humble in my first attempt. Is it necessary to bring someone along to keep an eye on your belongings (i.e. keys, wallet, gear) or is there a safe place for those things?

keep it in your transition bag. no one is gonna take your stuff, just keep it neat in corner or close to your bike.

Don't Worry Be Happy....

Keep all your belongings inside your bag in Transition....only triathletes are allowed inside Transition...they usually have secuirty guards at the entrances enforcing...

Good Luck!!!!

Yosel and Velorider - thank you for the information. What's the atmosphere like after the tri? What are you supposed to do? Do most riders just finish the race and take off? I really appreciate your input.

you can't really take off right away....since transition remains closed for a little bit since some athletes might still be comming in.  but alot of people stay and wait for times being posted.

not sure how many people will be in that race but 500-1000 is a great size triathlon and there will be alot of people in the finish.  usually there is a few things that are being given out etc etc.

pace yourself and just have fun.

I'll be there.

This will be my second OLY and third tri.  First OLY being the MIT (March).  First sprint being the FAU wellness (1.5 weeks ago).  Getting better with each race.

Just got a new bike (a Cervelo P2c) and hope to kill my last bike time this go around.

My overall goal is to just beat my last times, with my new time goals.  And, cut down on my trans. times.

I, personally, love the swim, then bike, and only tolerate the run (but I'm improving).

I look at these events as pure fun!  And, only compete with myself.  With that attitude, I find I don't get pre-race nerves and end up being relaxed for the event.

Plus, I always end up talking with a few of the other competitors pre and post race.  Everyone tends to be really friendly and have a positive attitude.  Always a great bunch of people.

Hope to see you all there.

The swim leg usually is along the beach...and...you swim straigh till a buoy that is locate at 1/2 mile far from the swim exit and where you will do an U-turn...and...then swim back...It's usually calm but last year was very choppy...and...the tide can be low or high...you can check that in Weather Channel...LOL
