Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 to get ready, then drove to meet David Lee and Scott Wilder to carpool out to the race.
At home I ate a yogurt and banana, and drank a triple espresso from my machine. I sipped on a water while driving.
Once at the race I unloaded all of our stuff at the finish line, then had to drive out to the far lot to park.
Got body marked, picked up my timing chip, and set up my transition. I'm a minimalist with my set up, and kept feeling like I was missing something.
Then just hung around talking to Scott as this was his first ever triathlon.
Event warmup:

Nothing. I dipped into the water just to get wet and goggles sealed.
Prior to the start I was very impressed with the number of spectators already present. Very nice and enthusiastic crowd.
Swim
  • 11m 12s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was a little bummed at my time for how well I felt this went while I was swimming it. I guess the important thing is that I kept a nice steady pace the entire swim, I didn't get hit by anybody else in the mass start, and my suit didn't fill up with water this time (see my RR on the Showdown at Sundown International).
My performance here was definitely what I needed as a confidence boost for the Gulf Coast swim in a couple weeks.
What would you do differently?:

For sprints I just need to swim faster, not worry about half iron races in two weeks.
Transition 1
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

A good T1 with a wetsuit for me. In my last race I ended up sitting down to pull it off. But not today.
Getting into my shoes while pedaling was tougher than usual. But at least I didn't fall down like my wife said a lot of racers did.
Oh, and I did a complete 'ball-buster' doing the jumping on bike thing. I don't know if that was worth it.
What would you do differently?:

Not jump on bike.
Bike
  • 32m 58s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 20.38 mile/hr
Comments:

A good performance for me, not great. I got passed by a boat load of racers from my wave. But as long as I ride within myself I don't let it bother me.
I was pleased by the absence of cars (I saw one), but disappointed in the biking etiquette of some racers. Guys not staying to the right, blockers, and shaky handling had me very alert the whole time.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate better. An early gel might have helped too. Oh, and GOING FASTER wouldn't have hurt.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Smooth and fast.
What would you do differently?:

Learn the whole jumping off moving bike thing. But I'm too scared to try it and fall.
Run
  • 24m 43s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought my time would be way worse than this. I felt like I was wearing lead diving boots the whole time. My cadence never felt right, and my breathing sounded like a dog dying. That being said, a very good run in the end for me.
What would you do differently?:

I think under hydrating and no ingestion of any gels may have played a part in the way I felt.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with my wife and kids for cheering on the rest of my TriDads group as they finished.
Once I remembered, I looked at my time and unofficially new I had PR'ed for my sprint distance. That was a good feeling. And to have finally lost enough weight to be out of the Clydesdale division and racing in the 35-39 group, and to finish in the top half of the division...that was a great feeling.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. I just went through about two weeks of some out of town family matters that had me unable to do ANY training. And I think it showed.

Event comments:

My first Tri The Parks series race and I loved it! Lots of help, things on time and very organized.
I will be doing more of these races in the future.

Congrats on the sprint PR!

Yeah, I don't have any confidence in my balance so I don't do the 'jump off the bike thing' either.

Nice looking day..

Great race..your T's look very good.  Why take a chance of flying stop on T2 when you smoked everyone!  Congrats on a good start to the season.  Good luck on your HIM.

Nice race! I am following in your footsteps. I am almost out of the Clydesdale div. and would love to be at 1 hour 10. It is encouraging to see it can be done! Thanks for the inspiration!
