Who is doing this race as their first tri? It was my favorite last year. I would also say it was my hardest one. The reasons it was my favorite was: it was my first since moving to Richmond, it has an OWS vice pool swim, and trail running made the 5k more interesting. Reasons for it being hard for me: Lack of training since I was moving less than 4 weeks before, trail running is more difficult than running in a straight line. I prefer to start the season with a shorter sprint and the Tavern is a longer sprint format.

Not my first tri...but I am doing it again this year.  That hill on the bike before the turnaround is a b*tch!!  Love that run though!

You are right about that! Sorry I forgot to mention it. That was another reason I was hurting at the end. I will definitely try to get out there and do a practice run on that course the weekend before. They should have an organized practice sometime before. It is a good opportunity to get a brick in before the race.

My husband and I are gonna relay it: he can't swim and I'm in poor shape, having juuust started up my training.

I'll swim and run: is the trail run, like, leaves and sticks trail? Or just packed dirt trail?

The trails are packed dirt. I don't remember any bad spots at all. The beginning and end are on the trails and the middle part runs through a local neighborhood.

It is a good one. I hope you are moving to an area with lots of triathlons and great people to train and race with.

I volunteered at Rocketts on the bike course. I felt for the people on the bikes. I was cold and had a rain jacket on!! Did you compete in Rocketts, Dano?

I did not do Rocketts. I haven't done an Olympic length yet but If it was later in the season I would be all over it though. I am planning to do Big Acorn or Naylors Beach this year.

How is training going for everyone. I am hoping to get in the James for a swim on Friday, weather permitting.
Anyone have any tips for the trail portion of the run. My times were too slow last year and I am looking for any strategy that will help reduce my times.

I've tripped a few times on the run course in the two years that I've done the race.  There are some exposed branches and roots that you need to watch out for.

I like the bike course.  The hills at the turn around is tough, but the rest is pretty fast.  If anyone did Rockett's, I think the Tavern tri course is a little tougher.

Wish I could but I will be out of town that weekend and probably won't get any training in at allCry
I usually see lots of cyclists leaving from ACAC fitness center on Robious rd on Sat mornings around 7am. There is a bike lane down Robious Rd towards James River Rd where the Taven Tri is held. It is about 3.7 miles oneway to Robious Landing Park but you could ride farther down Robious if you wanted to. If you have time I would just park at Robious landing Park and ride the actual course. You need to experiece that one big hill before race day if possible.

I'm running in the morning (7:30), but I'd be up for riding the course after that.

They don't let swimming from the shore at that location unless the race is going on.  You need a canoe or kayak to jump out from.

I could do the ride with you.  It's a doozie.

I hope you have a good ride. I am out of town or I would go too. Too bad you can't go at 0800. There is a preride posted on the website by the TriGirl Training group. I assume they mean this Saturday. I am definitely going to ride it the Sat before, 6/20. Probably at 0700 if anyone is interested. Last year RMS set up a ride the weekend before. If they do again I will just ride with the group.

Here's info on the swim for the Tavern tri.  It might get shortened based on weather conditions, but you will know at packet pickup which course is being used:

RMS I Love The Tavern Swim Info: There are two alt swim routes. The decision will be announced at the Sat 3pm race briefing. (1) 450m up current and turn around, (2) about 200m up current from the floating boat dock to the exit dock, (3) about 300m down current from the west boat ramp to the floating dock.
