Subject: Car keys during open water swim
Is it inadvisable to tie my car key on the strap to my wetsuit when I go for a swim?  It's just a normal key, and I don't see why it can't get wet.  Might it get lost or rusted?

i typically just leave my keys in my bag that is on the beach by the water - then again, the park i go to typically has other swimmers there too.  if someone wants to steal my car - well, they are taking a huge risk by doing so. . i think it would be much more likely for you wallet/watch etc to get stolen - those things, i leave in the car.

lol...yeah, I just leave my keys either in my gym bag or on top of my flip flops.  I'm not usually doing an OWS where there are a bunch of people.  And if someone has the audacity to take my keys, they will be severely disappointed with what they find.

I just leave them in my bag, but when I beach dive, I take the key off and just shove it up the arm of my wetsuit.  Doesn't go anywhere and has never rusted.

My Zoot tri shorts have pockets...I put my car key in one of them...no chance of it going anywhere with a wetsuit over that.

So far, I've devised a string out my old shoe lace to put around my torso over my shoulder like a girl would wear a purse, or a dude would wear a murse underneath the wetsuit.  Bad idea?

The car is the only thing I have in my name, and I would like to have a little piece of mind when I swim.  These are, tough times, after all.

Tough question.  My key is the kind with the FOB that locks and unlocks and sets the alarm, so can't really get wet.  Most likely just like every other person I put it under a rock on the inside of one of the tires.  It has always been a problem that is troublesome.

Don't you use a safety boating friend?  I would leave the key with the friend.  Otherwise, I would be concerned about drowning.

They now make a waterproof bag that floats for regular cameras so you can take pictures underwater and not get it wet.  I've thought about using this very small bag for my garmin to track distance in the OWS, but they also recommend you to use it for keys, walets etc.  It has a lanyard so you can attach it to yourself as well.  I'm sure it will cause some type of drag, but that will only make you faster in the long run during the actual race!  Here is the link of one site that carries them.  http://www.waterproofgear.net/waterproof-bag-1.htm  Also, there is one of those "hide a key" that you can put under your car.  I always go by a tree, cover my keys with some leaves and remember the spot.

Be careful with the keys.  Although it may look like a normal key, it may still have a computer chip in it.  I own a body shop, so let me know your make and model and i can tell you if it does.  They can get a little wet in the rain, but i wouldn't recommend swimming with them.

That's what I do. My Sugoi shorts have a key pocket on the inside. With a wetsuit over it (or even without a wetsuit), it's really secure.

Masterlock 5500- it's a combo lock that opens to hold keys.

Once the car is locked, I lock the lock to the bumper and put the key in. That way I'm never locked out. Works great for races, swims ect where you don't want to carry (or lose) your car key.

I just put my keys in the gas tank - I make sure no one is looking but that's where they go before I hit the water.  The BF & I have always done this & never had any problems.  OH great.  Now our big secret is out.  Foot in mouth

I always go with behind the fairing on my roof rack or in the tray of the bike rack on the roof.  My element is tall so people cant really see all the way up there

Well, I don't actually drop them all the way in the gas tank, just behind the gas door!  I know some of the gas tank doors lock with the car, but mine doesn't and I've never had a problem!

My gas door has to be opened with a lever from inside. :-/

My car has an electronic key pad to unlock the door, so I just lock my keys in the car.

Whenever I can't take my keys with me (sometimes I forget to wear something with pockets and then drive my bike somewhere), I usually just find a place to hide the car keys, like inside a tree or under a rock or some similar place where nobody's going to go look for it.  If I think I might not be able to remember which rock i left it under, i will make a little pile of stones or break a branch next to it or something.

I just leave my keys in the car and the car unlocked - that way people looking to steal a car will think it is a set up Wink

I use one of these locking gas caps that hides a key inside.

Be like Christopher Walken in Pulp fiction with the watch Actually I just leave mine in my transition bag on the beach.  I'm pretty trusting.
