TooTallTri - 2009-05-21 2:11 AM Spring runoff = super dirty right now for the MTB. I clean it every few rides and lube it at the same time.

for me it means I clean mine off after every ride.  Place I ride at has several creek crossings, so there's no way to keep it totally clean.  So since I spray it down, I then clean the chain and lube the derailleurs and chain.  I've noticed if I don't clean/lube my chain after each ride it doesn't shift as well, all that grit getting in the chain makes it harder to shift when you really need to and puts me in danger of breaking a chain (I've done it once already.. yes downshifting too late.. I know).

At this other dryer spot hopefully I can get away with only needing to clean/lube the chain afterwards, but it probably won't be that dry until July.

Not very.

I think I've washed the Klein twice (maybe 3 times) in the 2 1/2 years I've had it.  It was on the trainer all winter and the front wheel was looking pretty skanky from all the sweat.  I haven't washed the Javelin (but it did get cleaned by the LBS earlier this year during a tune-up).

I have cleaned/lubed the chain "monthly" (semi-monthly) OK...occasionally... (more frequently than the bike itself gets cleaned).  I rarely ride in the rain, so most of the time I just ride the bike.

Well now I'm feeling guilty. I usually clean my road bike when one of my cycling buddies comments with disgust that my bike needs to be cleaned. So maybe....twice a season? I guess I'll clean it when I get home...

I'm currently training for a century, so maybe about 100 - 200 miles a week.

My mountain bike is still dirty from last year.

Nothing else in the garage is covered in mud and dirt, everything gets cleaned up after use.  Do you stick your sweaty workout clothes back in the closet or dresser after wearing them?

Not back in the dresser, but stuffed into the duffel bag that lives in the garage, or draped over handlebars.

I'll admit it, for 3/4 of the year I don't wash workout clothes after one use. I do generally wash them every time in the summer when I am extra sweaty.

I rarely clean mine.  The tri bike is pretty good and I may wipe off some sweat after a long ride.

The MTB is filthy...

So you guys who leave your mtb dirty, do you at least clean off the drivetrain?

Like I said before. The single speed, almost never. If it gets squeaky I wipe the chain with a rag as part of my lubing process, but that is it. That is the beauty of single speed bikes.

The geared mountain bike is lubed every week or every ride (depending on which is less frequent, I tend to pick the single speed). I clean it maybe seasonally, but my lubing practices make for a fairly clean drive train.

every ride outside. but its still new.  I did my first ride on it less than a month ago. most of my training during the week is inside due to my work schedule but after long rides on the weekend I clean it all.  I'm only riding 80-100 miles/week outside and doing 2-3 hours on the trainer during the week right now. its an 08 qr lucero.

Tri bike is pretty dirty right now after Columbia.  I'll clean it before E-Man.  Bike is around $6k with race wheels.

My road bike is decent right now.  But I haven't been riding for crap this year (again) so not any real reason it would be that dirty.  Bike is around $4k or so.

Reading these posts has made me feel really guilty. My 08 P2C is beyond filthy. I'm riding 70-80+ miles a week right now, and I've never really cleaned it except for my chain, rings and cranks.

Well, that's enough BT for right now. Gonna go give my baby a bath.

My P2C is typically cleaner than my kitchen counter.  My kitchen counter is pretty clean.  After a few days of sweat, I'll wipe it down with some Bike Lust (the bike).

My mountain bike gets "cleaned" each time I ride across the river!

I ride one or the other 3 - 5 days a week, depending on the season.  I'd rather not even try to add up how much I have in either bike.

I might hose it off and spray cleaner/lube on it once in a while.

It gets a complete wash maybe once every month or two.

I was looking at it after my Tuesday ride and felt it was about due.

My Karma road bike - absolutely clean. I don't ride it in the rain though. Ride it about 5-6 times/week

My Trek - fairly clean it about once/month in the summer (only ridden on rainy rides in the summer) and once/every 2 weeks in the winter. Ride it 3-5 times/week, so it can get fairly dirty at the end of 2 weeks

My Karma track bike - absolutely clean. I ride it 2 times a week in the winter and 1 time a week in the summer, but only inside.

My CCM communter bike - pretty dirty. I ride over alot of crap and don't care.

ETA: I have a team contract that states that I have to keep my bike clean even though I don't have/can't fit the team bike.

So the people who just re-wear work out clothing without a washing - are you the same ones complaining about not having a social life?  I'm not saying there is a connection, just wondering.....

What size is this?  I will gladly restore it to proper condition at a reasonable price of nothing!  You just pay shipping and handling.  It may take a couple of years to turn it around though...

Nope, must be that all the people I socialize with fall into that grungy category, or my stellar personality makes the stink worth while But most likely the reason is that the person I socialize with the most still poops in her pants.

The last two seasons I've torn down my wife's and my bike and given each a thorough cleaning. pedals off, headset stripped down, brake pads rescuffed, cables lubed, all those little bits of road grime and tar that get built up under the down tube, etc.

ETA: my tri bike is now clean.

I had a cable replaced at an REI before a sprint last year and the wrench commented on how dirty my bike was. But, then he said, "That means you're using it!" Apparently he sees lots of clean, unused bikes in his shop...

I agree w. other, for me, clean = fast

Also, if you ride w. a group - most of the time, the people that break down have dirty bikes. A bike is such a simple machine, dirt and grime can wreak havoc on the drivetrain and moving parts.
