Total Time = 1h 04m 59s
Overall Rank = 3/109
Age Group = w30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/20
Pre-race routine:

Rode from finish to transition, set up, chatted with Ryan, Mike, Kristine and Drew - jogged to start, got in and swam (not NEARLY enough...)
Event warmup:

Not enough warmup for such a short race. Being the first race of the year, I was nervous. I was hoping this would be a small race with like 60-80 people total, but there were over 250 people racing.
Swim
  • 13m 29s
  • 900 meters
  • 01m 30s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started right behind Ricci. I thought it would be a good pace for me and I could not sight. I know he's a good enough swimmer to get me through there. My plan was to hold him until the last bouy then go around, but by the last bouy I lost him in the sea of red caps from the first wave. I had trouble at the end there getting through them all in a straight line. Other than that - good swim. Maybe I should have just gone out faster though??

Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

There was a little bit of a jam at the mount line so instead of risking it, I just hopped on and started going - no flying mount today. I'm fine with that. Only one other woman had a faster T1 so not bad.
Bike
  • 27m 17s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good - had to push a little. My AVG watts were lower than I wanted but not by much - I'm guessing it was the soft pedal in the bike path section at the end.

What would you do differently?:

Gone harder in the middle/ last third before the easy mile.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Pretty quick although, I got stuck behind someone when I was trying to go through this NARROW transition area. Thanks to Ryan for telling me to hurry up and the dude finally let us by. Only 1 or 2 had a faster T2 than me, and all but one of them were in the first wave, so they had a clearer time getting through. Not too bad all in all.
Run
  • 21m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't drink almost anything on the bike or run, and my throat and chest felt tight... Don't know if it is correlated or what, but it was a little tough. I also got passed in the first 1/4 mile of the run by the gal that won overall - she passed me like I was standing still!! I should be happy with 7 min pace, but I feel like I have more improving to do here.

What would you do differently?:

Be mentally tougher :)
Post race
Warm down:

jogged with Drew back to start

What limited your ability to perform faster:

early season, mental confidence

Event comments:

Would have been better if the actual festival wasn't rained out - planned on staying most of the day with the kids, but OH WELL.
Anyway, good race, but the bike course needed more volunteers and better warning for that turn onto the bike path. SEVERAL of us almost missed it!

Had trouble getting my HR down under 182 for the first 2-3 miles. Must have been the view of Ricci's a$$ keeping it up :) It was false flat for a bit and I finally felt under control after the first flase down/ actual flat.
Wind: None
Course: Around the lake. I was NOT prepared for the last few turns off the road, onto the bike path, twisty bike path, then back onto the road, then upto transition. Had I known I would have to slow down that much I would have pushed a little harder on miles 7-9.

Didn't have a HRM, but was constricted with the breathing. I guess I was moving pretty fast, but still shouldn't have been that constricted. Usually it's my legs that are the limiter, but not today. Maybe because it was so cold?
Course: Out back, then past the transition to the finish line. A little wierd towards the end with some twisty turns to get it to exactly 5k so I am told, but made it funky.

Nice job out there - not bad for your first race. Hopefully the beginning of a string of podiums for you throughout the season! I had the same issue with watts dropping on the soft pedaling during the last part of the bike. And don't feel bad - Jenny came cruising by me like I was going backwards on the run too!

Fast as always, Julia.

Does Chris know you were using Ricci as pace booty?
