Different Cassette Speeds For Indoor Trainer?

I think you would have issues but, if you're trying to save money, why buy a second wheel at all?  Use a cheap or used tire for the trainer and swap it when you go outdoors.  It should take up less than 5 minutes of your time and is good practice, anyway.  Works for me.

+1 Trainer tire or old tire = much cheaper.

I've considered doing what you guys say and just changing the tires but to be honest, changing a tire for me is such a bloody hassle and I'd prefer not to.

I just want to know if a 7 or 8 speed cassette will work on a 9 or 10 speed bike for indoor training???

Changing a tire is a lot easier (IMHO) than changing a cassette. Unless you plan on buying another casette to put on the cheap training wheel, in which case it's no longer cheap.

Plus, if changing a tire is "such a bloody hassle" you probably need the practice.

I'm not going to change the cassette every single time I ride, I'm going to have 2 real wheels with seperate cassette's.

I just want to know if you can do it or not???? Because I can buy a rear wheel with 7-8 speed cassette on it for $30.

Just please answer the question whether or not it is possible to put a 7-8 speed cassette on a 9-10 speed bike?

Just did this exact thing - my buddy at the bike shop said to use the same geared cassette on the trainer wheel (i.e buy another cassette with same ratios). He said if you use a different gear cassette you risk stretching your chain and damaging the derailleur going back and forth.  Not looking to start a war on changing tire vs. seperate trianer tire... just sharing my experience.

Well it could be done but like said before alot of adjusting the deraillure and you would damage your chain, a 10spd chain is alot thinner that a 7 or 8spd chain.  I have 3 sets of wheels that I run on my bikes never a problem with wear or anything like like that.  If you get a wheel that takes shimano or sram you should be able to fit any size cassett on it, its all about the freewheel size.  I dont know if you are aware of this but they make tires to use on a trainer or to ride on streets.  Hope this helps.
