Pre-race routine:

Slept in! Race was 4 miles from home so I got to sleep till a decent hour.
Event warmup:

None. Went to get in water, zipper stuck on suit - someone helped me and got in up to my ankles and the whistle sounded for everyone to get out. Stretched a little bit.
Swim
  • 09m 1s
  • 540 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt good - sighted OK, water visibility was poor. Could barely see my hands in the water. Tough to get out of lake-a bunch of rocks and a steep exit. There were folks there helping out though.
What would you do differently?:

attempt to find someone and draft.
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

wetsuit completely stuck on heels, pulled and pulled and pulled then sat and yanked. Much more effective. Other than that, no problemos.
What would you do differently?:

Not get suit stuck!

Comments:

Was hoping to be much closer to 20 mph here. Shoveling and wheelbarrowing mulch all day yesterday kinda paid a toll here I think. It was the first race with my new bike and I handled her quite well. Gearing on the hills wasant' an issue, just getting loosened up was. My legs were super heavy at the start and took a while getting warmed up. Max speed was 38.9 which was RIGHT before a sharp right turn. On the way back to T2 there's a nice downhill part - roads weren't closed to traffic and the roads were pothole-y so I was in the middle of the road where it was smoother. Let the cars wait. There was a detour at the bottom of this hill for the cars which I didn't know about so when the cars stopped, I was in my aerobars on the left side but was able to jam on the rear brake just in time not to crash. Did a fishtail but maintained control thankfully!
What would you do differently?:

Not do all that yardwork yesterday!
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Fast for me but could have been much quicker. Racked the bike by my seatpost and planted my front wheel on top of both sneaks and racebelt. Duh.
What would you do differently?:

See above. Apply bodyglide to feeties.
Run
  • 28m 54s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, I'd like to think my yardwork here played into my pokey time. Im always slow but usually a little faster than this. Course had a slight up hill most of it and a nice little downhill the last 3/4 mile or so.
What would you do differently?:

Nuttin. Passed tons of folks on the bike and only got passed about 6 times on the run. Was looking at everyones legs and there was only one girl who passed me from my AG. She flew by me like I was standing still so there was no point in trying to catch her. Saw a chick behind me at the finish so we both gave it a strong kick and I beat her by a hair. She was in her 40's so it didn't matter anyway.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out w/ Mike and the girls :) So glad they came!! Since this was so close to home, there were a bunch of familiar faces so it was a fun time. Not exactly warm down but this race has AWESOME food!!! The regular stuff plus oreos, chocolate chip cookies, trays and trays of skittles, mm's, bubble gum, peanuts, chex mix, cheeze doodles, etc....yummmmmmmmm

What limited your ability to perform faster:

3 yards of mulch.

Event comments:

Girls were playing on the playground and we were hanging around -Mike went to check results and came back to tell me I took first! I thought he was joking but I went to look and he wasn't! :) :) It was odd b/c waves weren't by AG - I was in the last wave w/ older folks, young folks just a bunch of different people. Maybe since I signed up yesterday I just got plunked in back. Oh well. I was happy to say the least!!
