Overall Rank = 86/595
Age Group = M20-24
Age Group Rank = 3/10
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early that morning and made some coffee and got some toast. Had everything packed and ready to go, just had to get in the car pick up Theresa and take off.

Took a gel about 40 minutes before our wave ended up going and just drinking some water.
Event warmup:

Got my area set up and was more worried about my wetsuit and the OWS than getting my bike out for a quick ride. Wanted to take the bike and make sure everything was good but ran out of time. Oh well. Went and stood watching the waves ahead of me take off and try to calm my moms nerves down about the OWS
Swim
  • 07m 41s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went great. I started on the left side in front so i had a good position to be in the lead. Took off and felt great. Breathing was good for the first 200 and I felt like i was flying and though about slowing down. I hit the first buoy and felt strong and ahead of the pack. thought about slowing down because i thought i was going too fast, but my breathing was going great so just kept pushing it. Still felt great after the second buoy, but then i lost my navigation. It was easy to spot the buoys but i couldnt find where on the beach was the mats. Found a kayak and just swam towards that and that worked out cuz by the time i got to him i saw the mats and ended up great. Got out of the water at about 7 and felt awesome about that. Had about a 35 second run up from the beach to the mats for the transitions.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I felt like i was where i needed to be on the turns and navigation throughout the swim. Never had to jockey for position at all which was awesome, I was just too fast for em!
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Transition went good. I was only concerned about getting my wetsuit off and that went really good. Took that off threw it off to the side on my bag and got all my bike stuff on. Thought about putting on a jacket but i figured i would be warm enough. Nice being one of the firsts in my wave out because had a lot of room to work around in my area.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, had everything set up really good and wetsuit came off with no problems. Only thing that i might change in the future is a jump start on the bike with shoes on the pedals already.
Bike
  • 44m 22s
  • 15.8 miles
  • 21.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Started off with my HR high which i expected. Took the first 5-10 minutes fairly easy to get that down. Once I got it down to where it should be I started picking it back up. Bike was fun, had a group of about 4-5 of us that were all together. We kept passing eachother back and forth and just slingshotting eachother for about 10 miles. It was nice because pretty good group of riders and made me keep up with them. Felt like a took in enough water and took a gel at about mile 10 or 11. Just took half of it. At about mile 12 i took off from the pack and started pounding it home. Got to about mile 15 and thought to myself why arent I done? but later to find out it stretched out and was 15.8 mile course. No biggy. Hit the corner and headed to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Here, the only thing that I would do different is get stronger legs. I felt like I did good, but always room for improvement. Other than that, felt really good and saved enough in my legs for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Here, i thought I got out faster but oh well. I think I second guess myself if I had everything for a second and threw me off track.
What would you do differently?:

dont know, act faster a little bit i guess. Overall it was good.
Run
  • 22m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Run went real good. Tried to make sure my pace was under 7'20" overall. Thought that would have been a good pace to try and beat. Started off and my feet and legs felt good, werent cold or numb. Took the first .3 miles to loosen up and then turned it on. Really nice run on the legs with the crushed rock path. Was at about 7'30" pace until about mile 2. Was fighting a side ache for a while and thought it was either the gel, or didnt take in enough water during the bike when i took the gel. That went away about mile 2 which was nice. When i saw the mile 2 marker, i just told my self to start picking it up and leaving it all out here. Went to about a 7 min pace up until about mile 2.7. Heard the crowd and knew it was almost over. Had some gas left, so just started sprinting. Hit the hill going down, and when i turned the corner just sprinted all i had left to the finish. Looked down and saw my pace at 6 and just hoped i didnt puke or pass out haha. Crossed the line and felt really good with my time. Wanted to break 22, but ill take 22'01"!
What would you do differently?:

The side ache hurt at the beginning. Dont know what exactly caused it but it was either the gel or not enough water. Will have to play around with that. Other than that, just working more on some speed work for sprint distances. Besides that, was very pleased that I paced myself and had some in the tank for the end. My biggest problem is starting off way to fast and dying in the end. So very happy about that.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked it off and hit up the bathroom. Got some warm clothes on and went and found my dad and father in law to see how theresa was doing, and my mom. Just walked around getting my legs to feel better and talked to a bunch of people for a while and then cheered on theresa off the bike and helped her, and then my mom shortly after to help her out. Both were really frazzled and theresas stomach was a little upset. After they got off on the run, just stood with the family and watched everyone and waited for the rest to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just practice with speed and time trials. Havent done a lot to work on speed on the bike, and that would help me in the future. Other than that, i was very pleased with my times. Especially the OWS. Everything in the swim just clicked and worked out, which is nice for the first one because i have heard many horror stories. Nice to start off with that.

Event comments:

Great race and will more than likely do it again next year. Placing 3rd in the AG was great. Really big confidence booster with all the training ive put in and the progress ive made from last year. After this makes me feel better because SOR was starting to play tricks in my mind with the miles on bike and run.

Nice work. You might want to check out these Thursday night time trials they have in the area. I can send you the specifics if you want, but generally they are at 6:30 pm every Thursday, and the length is about 10 miles.
