My first Half Iron Man- overall place: 23, age group place: 2, swim 1.2 miles: 34:59, 100yd pace 1:40, T1: 0:57, Bike 56 miles: 2:46:08, avg mph: 20.2, T2: 1:01, run: 1:41:59, mile pace:7:48, finish time: 5:05:02

(not my "a" goal but) I'm pretty happy with the results.  I feel OK today.  I think once I have time to forget the pain, I'll be ready to sign up for this or another 70.3 next year.

I made mistakes - not testing equipment, bad choices in clothing, stumbles here and there and the biggest one - nutrion/hydration.  I need to write down the problems to improve next time.  With the same training and better race day planning / strategy I can get under 5 hours.

I had contemplated doing a full IM in '11 but have decided that it isn't time yet.

Emmie - Holy crap, you are the one that did 5:15!!!! I have been joking to people that I was 2nd in my age group, but the woman who was first finished an hour 5 minutes ahead of me.... that was YOU! Wow! Way to go!

My race report is here:http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=182098  This was my first HIM.

Everything went well for me, except I am an idiot and didn't do my gear check Saturday because it was raining. Consequently I didn't know I couldn't get into my big chain ring. GAH! Couldn't fix it. Even stopped to try fixing it. Pulled as hard as I could on the shifter. So I did the whole course in the little chainring. Ugh. Probably saved me from going even harder, though. I went too hard on the bike. I am used to racing Oly.

Took second in my AG after Emmie here. I'm proud of that even if there were only 4 of us. I'm proud of my whole performance up to the run. I can do a 1:55 half-marathon open. My run was crappy. That's to be expected. At the time, I couldn't imagine doing a full, but now the day after, I'm excited about it.

Brue - Saw you lots! Thanks for watching the kids so David could help me after. I can't believe you can look like death warmed over and still be running 7:50 miles. I swear, man.

Newbz - Sorry you had to drop out. You are a speed demon!

Bananatoes - Great race, man! Good to see you out there!

dolche - It was great seeing you! Your bandana made me cheery! And those caterpillars did too!

Saw Scott at the campground afterward - thanks for stopping by!

Anyone I missed - good to see all the BTers!

Thanks!!! I trained really hard for this race- my previous best was 5:46, and 6:05 before that. But-- I am paying for it today! So, so sore!

I'm sorry you had to stay in your small ring. That sucks! I've had that problem occur in rainy weather, only to have it "heal" itself when the cables dry out. So, anyone have anymore races planned for the season? I'm doing Beach 2 Battleship in NC in November, then a long-overdue recovery period featuring pizza and beer.

Congrats! Don't worry about missing the "A" goal- I think the longer the race, the steeper the learning curve. There are simply more ways for things to go wrong!! What problems did you have with nutrition/hydration? I had trouble with that, too. I couldn't figure out how to get enough calories- I was SERIOUSLY bloated from fluids (Perpetuem and Heed) so I couldn't get enough calories in.

my problem was not having sufficient calories and fluids before starting the run. i was already cramping from mild dehydration at the stat of the run - something you just can't fix mid race. i ran out of energy half way - more calories and fluids toward the bike finish would prob help this.
