Pre-race routine:

out of bed at 5:30. Light ceral breakfast. Load up the truck and head over to get a coffee. Got to the site and it was very muddy form the day before. Set up transition area get registered and wander around a bit.
Event warmup:

Short jog to loosen everything up. felt decent. Got into my wet suit and went for a short swim to get wet suit warmed up.
Swim

  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall a very good swim for me. My second leg was better than the firt. mY sighting was better and I got into a good rythym much more quickly. It was a mass start and I wa at the back off to the left hand side. Went to wide around the bouys the first round but did stay out of the traffic. Second trip around I moverd into the pask and swam over/through a couple of People. My first shotgun mass start. I could have swam a little harder on the second round but was comfortably tired when I cam out of the water. Could definitely have done th HIM 1900 m distance.
What would you do differently?:

Move cloer to the front at the start and get a good jump into the race.
Transition 1
  • 12m 12s
Comments:

Good transiton I was 5 out of 15 for the first transiton.
What would you do differently?:

nothing really. Was going to put my shoes on the bike but the grass wa very wet and I didn't want to have to ride with wet socks.
Bike
  • 1h 28m 48s

Comments:

not a good showing. There were a couple of hills I thought I was going to have to get off and walk but I did mange to stay on the bike. Loved the downhill portions. :) My back started to get quite sore about 25K into the race so was not in the areo postion as much as I would have liked coming back.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work more on my hills and especially on core body strength.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

very tired by the time I got back and walked my bike into the trasition are. I was 9th in age group in this transition.
What would you do differently?:

run through transition with bike. The actual changing of equipent was very smooth.
Run
  • 1h 09m 37s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

The worst part of this event by far. I came out ontothe run portion with a cramp in my right calf. I was hobbling along for about the first K to get it loosened up.After that I still wasn't able to get into a rythi=ym. It was run walk all the way through the run. Ribs tightened up with about 1 K left and had trouble breathing properly. I must have sounded like an old steam engine running through the finish line. Had several discussions with myself over just runing around and DNF"ing. That just wasn't an option
What would you do differently?:

Be more prepared and train more. I think having surgery on wed for my tooth took more out of me thatn I expected.
Post race
Warm down:

ladi down on the grass and poured water over me to cool down. Eventually walke darund a bit and then headed out for father's day with family. discovered I had lost 4 pounds dring the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not enough preparation?

Event comments:

Vary wel prepard race and everthign seemed to go off without a hitch. Well done.

Rob

Nice job getting the first Oly out of the way.  We both have plenty of time to redeem ourselves before the HIM.  You can do it!

You did a great job out there.  Your life was quite helter skelter leading up to this.  Nice work and plenty of time to pound away for that HIM.
