Subject: Toronto Strike - Pools closed

Is this affecting anyone else's training? My 6am swim is toast so I've resorted to heading to Mississauga for some laps.
Other options could include OWS out of Enduro sports in the beaches or the U of T pool.

Any other options with this crisis?

Go to a gym (like GoodLife of Premiere). Some locations hae pools at them as well.

I belong to a gym with a small pool. But I SHOULD be getting to OWS!

!!!  I didn't even realize this was affected !!  That really sucks!  I have a gym with a pool but it's really small and you feel as though you are flipping off the wall every three strokes so I try to use the community centre pool.  I was supposed to do 4x500 tonight which would basically equate to 125 laps in my gym pool!  I guess the good news is I have a lap counter

Another option would be to take a poll of all friends/family that live in a condo/apartment building with a pool...  I might have to start being nicer to the inlaws

I called up the Enduro Sports Beaches location - and apparently they aren't doing their OWS any more. (Or maybe they just didn't like my voice and told me this so I wouldn't show up ... ?)

This week will be a write-off for swims - but if the strike continues I definitely have to find an alternative. Anyone for a 'group' OWS after work during the week next week?

Possibly!  I don't have a wetsuit though so might be a wee bit cold.  I was thinking last night - if you aren't a member of a gym with a pool - maybe you should consider a trial membership at such a gym for a week or so   How long could the strike possibly last?  I had the gym pool to myself for over an hour last night.  Thanks to your heads up I didn't make the drive to the community centre.

UofT's 50m & 25m pools are open to public too but at a cost of $15 per visit which sucks.

Just made a new discovery. The Terry Fox pool in Mississauga (Cawthra and QEW) has a nightly length wave swim. It is described as:

Length Wave Swim (At Terry Fox Pool only) -Recommended for swimmers who would like the added challenge to their swim workout in an open water setting. Great for triathlon swim training.


What!!!!! This exists in the Toronto area. So the pool has a wave machine and they turn it on for OWS training. Only downside is it runs at 9:45pm in the summer. Here's the schedule http://www.mississauga.ca/file/COM/terry_fox_pool_ss09.pdf  Cost $3.50

I'm going tonight to see what it is like.

I would be interested in OWS during the summer just not next week (vacation). Quite surprised Enduro is not running them anymore.

That is really really cool.  I'd be interested in hearing about it - it's a bit of a trek for me but... might be worth the trek.

My friend used to lead those OW swims by enduro a couple years ago. Maybe they're not running them b/c no one is leading anymore? If people are looking for a job... hmm....

Very surprised to hear this.   It was never really a "coached" workout, just a gp interested in some OWS practice.  I didn't think there was anybody "leading" the swim.  I bumped into them one time swimming at Cherry Beach.

In any case, you can do OWS at the Toronto Beaches if you don't mind the cool water temperature.  Lifeguards are from the Toronto Police Marine Unit, so it shouldn't be affected by the strike.  You can get a feel of the water temp from the Oannes gp OWS diary here, 68F/20C Jun 25, which doesn't seem so bad.

Even if the lifeguards are still on duty, the water isn't being tested. The last posted date was June 21st and Cherry Beach was deemed unsafe to swim with the E. coli levels being 206 per 100 mL of water.

I am doing my first tri next weekend - Peterborough and am looking for somewhere to OWS. Guess I will have to stick with Kelso & pay the fees. The wave swim @ Terry Fox pool is a good alternative since it's gonna rain most of the week.

The city strike is gonna go on for a while so keep looking for alternatives.

I checked out the wave swim in Mississauga this weekend - saw a few other tri folk training there also.  It wasn't super crowded - nice wide lanes, there were about 5 of us of a similar level sharing a lane.  People there seemed to be pretty good at judging their pace and keeping to a lane that suited them.  The only thing I found with the wave pool is that you're swimming into the wave for the first 25, then with the wave on the 2nd 25, so it's not totally realistic, but to get some practice in water that isn't flat was good.

the premier fitness pool (dixon and Hwy 27) is 50 ft (15meterish) and is usually always empty. but yeah 150 laps later....I got a lot of practice on my flip turns with no one watching though
