Thaitri - 2009-06-25 12:34 PM Dont get excited cause I am also weak now...  I young healthy male should be able to bench their own weight 10X and should be able to do at least 10 pullups.  We need to learn to stay and fight like a man and not run away like a gazzel..  LOL

Speak for yourself friend.  I can still do 25 pullups and bench my weight 20+ times.  I plan on getting a little weaker, but not that much Tongue out

Id like to correct my statement.  I thought it said my body weight once instead of 10 times.  You have to be one heck of a gym rat to bench press your body weight 10 times.  Honestly say your 200lbs.  That means you can max out at roughly 250ish if your benching 200 x10 reps.  Thats a good bit of weight if you ask me

This super cool equation is based off of +5 lbs for each rep.

What is a gazzel? I know most runners would love to run like a gazelle, but is a gazzel even faster? If so, count me in...By the way though, how many times do you have to be able to bench your own weight before you qualify as a gazzel? Or is that unrelated...;-)

I have heard the body weight 10X thing from weight lifters before. If your goal is to be strong then yes I guess I agree but the word weak is all relative. It's like telling a gym rat that if he can’t run a 7 min mile then he is slow or that if he can’t swim 400 yards consecutively then he can’t swim. I don't know if I can do my body weight 10X but I can bench 260 and I'm currently 197 so I don't consider my self weak. I can do 10 pull ups though.

I've trained with the likes of THE Royce Gracie & Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhaes and have put men to shame that are 3-4X's stronger than me on the mat and in the bar I worked at. I quit BJJ b/c it was taxing on my elbow and shoulder joints though and affected my swim too much. It definately has some good memories though.
As for pullups and benching, I'm 6'2 and 167 lbs. with longer arms than I am tall, so not really made for either. At the Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge in Dallas (two days after getting hit by a truck on my bike) I kicked some a$$ in the run and 2nd in the swim. I only completed 7 pullups though.
I prefer healthy & fit over huge & muscley any day.

It's called survival of the fittest.

If you stay and battle, you may lose...

...but if you can out run the other guy, you're guaranteed to live another day!

Even in running it's subjective. I was a sprinter when I was young and could run a 4.4 40 yard but I couldn’t (never really tried) run a 5 min mile. Sprinters could call distance guys slow in there area and distance could call the sprinters slow in there’s.

It’s all just a pee contest

Benchpress is overrated and overweighted.  I can bench my body weight ten times, and did three sets of 10 pullups this morning......and whooptie doo.  Over inflated muscles does NOT equal strength necessarily.  An Ironman isn't called an Ironman for nothing.  Funny thread though.

^^ agree! ^^

I do pull ups pretty regularly and can do 10 rather easily... but that does not determine my level of fitness or health.  Ironman and triathlon, in general, is about balance... overall fitness... and a deep seeded desire to tackle something most people think is near impossible.

Numbers,  yea I once heard about the 10X body weight thing... Pullups I made that up..lol

TKD guy,  I also have a second degree in TKD.  Went into my current MMA and got scholled by a guy with 6 months experience.  Trust me,, traditional martial do very little for self defense.  Western boxing, Muay Thai, Judo and boxing is whee its at.

Bench press = useless.

Of course, I'm an expert marksman with several different weapons systems, so don't expect to get close enough to show off your combat bench press.

I would think pull ups would definatly benefit your ability to swim, you use alot of back and shoulder muscles.

Its all relative and everyone is built different and has different goals. My younger brother is 30 now, is training for his first full marathon. Ran his only competitive 5k in Iraq blazingly fast. He comes in at about 145lbs, bench pressed 175 12 times, does dozens of pull ups at one time, and can run like the wind.

Me, I used to do the weight lifting thing, not power lifting just too look good. Now IM fat, lazy and out of shape. So not only am I slow at everything, Im really not that strong. Sux but sad enough its reality.

a 200 pounder maxing at 250 isn't much of a gym rat.  You'll see plenty of 170-180lbers doing that if they're dedicated gym rats.

This thread is very interesting indeed.

Just a test for myself last summer I wanted to see if I could do 40 dash under 5.0, a 5k under 25, and lift 100lbs over my weight.

Ran a 4.9, did a 5k just over 25, and did put up 235 a couple of times (I'm a buck 45).

Speed, endurance and strength!  LOL

True. Like I said earlyer I'm 197 and can do 260 and I have only been doing free weights for 4 months now. Now I'm not a dedicated gym rat but I do weight lift more then other Tri people.

Come on, guys/gals. This is a triathlon site. All E-Wang measurement competitions must involve powertap numbers.

A gazzel is the gazelle equivalent of a triathlete Tongue out

Every day in Africa, a gazelle wakes up knowing he must run faster than the fastest lion or he will be eaten. Every day in Africa a lion wakes up knowing he must run faster than the slowest gazelle or he will starve. So it doesn't matter if you are a lion or a gazelle, when the sun comes up you better be running.
