Dont get excited cause I am also weak now...  I young healthy male should be able to bench their own weight 10X and should be able to do at least 10 pullups.  We need to learn to stay and fight like a man and not run away like a gazzel..  LOL

yep,
Subject: RE: Tri guys are weak...

interesting point.  I'm sure I can still bench press my weight easily but I'm not so sure about the 10 pull ups.  Not even my gym rat friends could do the pull ups either.

we don't strive to be strong. . i can bench my weight (145ish) 10x (or i could 6 months ago atleast ), maaybe do 10 pullups. . but i find that lifting hampers my swimming.  however, i will do it again in the winter because it makes me look better and we triathletes are vain and self-absorbed, as i learned from the other thread and letsrun.com

Weak is all relative.

Sure, you can't go in and bench press twice your weight... but you could out run/bike/swim any of those gym rats!

Happy to say I can easily do both, though I'm a bit fluffier 185 than I would like to be.

Why? Other than possibly increasing your chances to mate, what does benching your weight 10x do for you? Or 10 pullups?

Even at my peak fighting form in martial arts I don't think I could have benched my weight 10x, and I know I couldn't do 10 pullups. (I could do 15+ chinups, but that's a different thing entirely)

I did quite a bit of lifting (no cardio) before doing this Tri thing, so I can still do the bench and pullup stuff. For how long I don't know. I still lift about 4 days a week in combination with Tri training.  It makes me feel a little better about myself.

I'll never get why anyone cares about bench press. Great cosmetically, but most over-rated strength exercise EVAH!

x2 -- i'll take a set of deadlifts or squats over a set of bench presses any day.  EDIT:  Or pullups.  Pullups are pretty awesome.

Although it is good for ladies like me to develop a strong bench press, since we end up using the same muscles to push away the bench-pressing, biceps-curling himbos in the weight room when they come over to hit on us.

That is what knowledge of some form (or many) of martial arts is all about.  Then you can fight and still run like a gazzelle!

Being a 'weak tri guy' has it's advantages.

Like none of my friends ask me to help move them....

Ok first off that is just hot....it is.......ok, back on track here, to the OP I feel so much better now and look way better than when I was 220 lbs using 120lb dumbells for sets of incline benching 3 years ago. Now I am 168 lbs, lean, feel great,  oh and as for the fight like a man thing, I just got back from L.A. where my bro has his Brazilian Ju-jitsu accademy, I got twisted into a pretzel by a guy who weighed every bit of 148 lbs! LOL. Good stuff there, but yeah, no way could he catch me in a foot race Wink

Yeah, I had that. I went to an MMA studio as a 3rd degree black belt, twice ranked top 10 worlds (ATA TKD), multiple state sparring championships. Some little dude promptly said "Yeah, here's your azz, want to try again?"

It was pretty humbling.

I miss those days, one of the things I wished when I was doing MMA and BJJ was that I was in better shape.  Now I am in better shape but have absolutely no time and pretty much lost all my flexibility.

I, old guy 53... clydesdale that spent the last decade on the bike has decided to get back into SBR.  After self assessment my first step was weight sessions to get some strength back.  After reviewing the decade old logs, I was embarassed by lack of strength; not so after 3 months and many chronic aches have disappeared.  Now it's back to the pool and track...   So strength is all relative to the activity, clearly the cycling wasn't enough from a strength standpoint but I do think the SBR combo is much better.

Gosh, and I thought I was as healthy as I've ever been in my adult life.

Oh, and if I could run like a gazelle, well, that'd be awesome.

Just wondering; who and based on what they set up this guidelines for a young healthy male? why 10 and not 11 pull ups? why not if a healthy young athlete can't run a 45 min 10K then it is unhealthy or something arbitrary like that?

FYI - I can do more than 10 pullups and I don't do more than tri specific strenght training (no weight lifting for me) hence I guess I am a healthy male, whatever that means
