Subject: Tri-shorts question for the guys... *ahem*

Hi guys - this is a rather embarrasing first post, but I really could use your help!!

So, I'm new to the tri world (excited to be here!), and currently have some Zoot and DeSoto tri shorts. Both feel good on the bike, and I've been doing my marathon training runs in them too recently.  Overall both feel great running, with one exception - my "boys" are ALL over the place when it's hot and I'm sweating like crazy. It's not very comfortable to have them slippin' & slidin' all over hither & yon down there, and it can't look very attractive either when one part is down one leg and the other... well, I'll not continue with the visual!

I've searched, but the threads I've found don't have much to offer.  A jockstrap or some other type of underwear all sound like some bad potential for chafing, especially since I'm a heavy sweater.

I can't believe I'm the only guy out there who suffers like this on runs with tri shorts - anybody have any good advice?

Are some tri shorts for guys known to have better support than others for "the boys"?

Thanks in advance! Smile

Cheers, Chris

i've a hint...

pull the legs up a bit maybe an inch or so from where u normally wear ur bottoms...pull the slack all the way up to the goods, actually past the goods...it creates a "V" pocket and holds the tackle up front.

granted its visual for all, but u the cradle technique works....

OK... rookie mistake... in fact, I had not tried out my DeSotos in these swampy conditions... So, just did 7 miles in some DeSoto Forzas, and the situation was much, much better! The Desotos did a better job staying drier overall, and their design definitely kept the boys much better contained.

Halfpint - thanks for the tip!  Good stuff, and your suggestion works much better with the DeSotos than the Zoots, so double-bonus for the DeS's.

In all fairness to Zoot, the shorts I had been using is just their basic TriShort offering, so I suppose "you get what you pay for" applies here.  Perhaps the higher-end Zoot shorts work better, but since I'm happy with the DeSoto's, I'll stick with 'em.

I'm still open to other "been there, done that" suggestions!

Thanks again, Chris

Are you sure you have the right size of shorts?  All of mine (LG, Sugoi & Zoot) are snug fit.  There's no way the hardware is flippin' OR floppin' around.

X2 on hiking them up so as to eliminate any slack in the crotchular area. If that makes the waistband a little too high, you can always push the waistband down a little, but it's more important to have the bottoms pulled up.

I have DeSotos, too and they seem to have the shortest "rise" of all of my trishorts.

Ken - good question. I do feel like I have a good fit for both the DeSoto's and Zoot's I own. With the Zoot sizing, I fall between S and M (no pun intended), but I have big quads, so although the Zoot small fits my waist nicely, the legs choke me. The Zoot medium is looser up top (but still feels fine with low-impact activity), and that certainly doesn't help me with the wayward boys issue as I'm running.I purchased some my DeSotos after reading good feedback here on BT from other guys with small waists / big quads, and their size M fits me very nicely all over. Plus, the crotch design/stitching on the DeSoto Forza's seems to create a much more secure "pocket" for the package, and it was comfortable on last night's long run.I think this all just boils down to finding the right brand of gear that works for *you*, and the BT gear reviews have been a huge help as I've tried to shop smartly - thanks to you all! And, as I mentioned earlier, I had been using just the basic Zoot trishort. I picked some up at REI with my dividend, and they seemed OK at first, but this recent heat wave (mucho sweaty long runs!) have definitely exposed a weakness to their design with regard to running. It's all good - I'll just use them as bike trainer shorts this winter, so they aren't a total loss Thanks again to everyone!

I wear jaggad shorts and suits and like the fact that the 'grippers' on the legs arent rubber, so give a little more, I also have big quads and a relatively small waist so it has been tough to get shorts that fit well.

As for the 'show', dont worry, there's so much junk flying around at triathlons you'll fit right in!

My thoughts too.
